Jaws is one of three tables in the Universal Pictures Classics mini table pack, released in 2017 and available for Pinball FX 3. It is based on the 1975 film of the same name, which is itself an adaptation of the 1974 novel of the same name, written by Peter Benchley. The player is given the opportunity to either follow the shark hunter Quint’s efforts to hunt and defeat the titular giant white shark or terrorize the citizens of Amity Island and outwit Quint from the shark’s perspective.
Depending on player choice, the goal of the table may be to 1) recount Quint’s efforts to hunt down and defeat Jaws before he can menace the citizens of Amity Island further, 2) help Jaws terrorize the island’s people and outwit Quint’s efforts to stop him or 3) recapture the showdown between Quint and Jaws over the fate of Amity Island’s peace.
The way how one progresses towards the chosen objective depends on what it is:
To progress towards the first objective, the player must complete four missions that recapture major moments in Quint’s hunt for Jaws, which begin when either of two particular lanes are shot a total of several times. Each unique Quint mission is assigned to a pair of lanes or a miniloop.
To progress towards the second objective, the player must complete four modes that focus on Jaws’ terrorizing of the island’s citizens as well as his response to their efforts to stop him, which can be started up when JAWS is spelled on the return lane rollovers and the ball is locked onto the magnetic saucer. There, the player can choose which Jaws mission to start. (If JAWS is not completely spelled and the ball hits a lit return rollover lane, it will darken, causing progress towards spelling JAWS to be lost. However, once JAWS is completely spelled out, it will stay that way until a Jaws mission or a Showdown starts.)
To progress towards the third objective, the player must either complete any mission or progress faster by completing any of four “showdowns” or hybrid missions that start when the player follows the abovementioned activation process for starting a Jaws mission while a Quint mission is in progress, causing the two to overlap.
Missions must be completed successfully while keeping the ball in play in order to make any progress, and all missions, with the exception of Shipwreck, have a 1 minute time limit with some seconds added back when progress is made. Missions can be repeated as many times as possible, but the wizard modes can only be attempted once.
