In a YouTube video from March 2024, Iger confirmed that he has slowed down Marvel’s Cinematic Universe (MCU) projects, prioritizing well-known properties such as The Fantastic Four. The video also highlights Iger’s belief that “you have to kill things you no longer believe in, and that’s not easy in this business.” You can watch the video here:
Adios ma’am
Iger’s comments came during a conference speech, where he elaborated on his previous statements made during an earnings call about slowing down the franchise and focusing more on sequels or known properties. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Iger discussed the need to cut projects that he no longer believes in, which could spell trouble for certain upcoming Marvel releases.
While Disney has not yet publicly announced which projects may be cancelled, it’s likely that at least some are announced MCU projects that no longer felt like they would work. Iger emphasized that these cancellations are being made to ensure upcoming MCU movies and shows can focus on their quality.
Addressing talks of superhero fatigue, Iger seemingly thinks it isn’t as big of an issue as the quality of individual films. He cited the success of Oppenheimer and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 as examples of how audiences still crave great films, regardless of the genre.
It appears that Iger remains committed to making MCU movies, but wants to ensure the quality of the projects that Disney and Marvel are putting out. With the reported cancellations of ‘Captain Marvel 3’ and ‘Ant-Man 4’, it seems the studio is already making tough decisions to align with Iger’s vision for the future of the MCU.
