Anyone else remember SegaSonic Arcade🤘

I remember getting the opportunity to play this Japanese only arcade game in Hamley’s toy store in London back in the day. Back when they actually the entire ground floor as an arcade.

SegaSonic is a unique title for two reasons. Firstly it was a Japanese only release, which Hamleys had clearly imported since I remember the game being in Japanese and not understanding any of it🤣. Secondly was the unique mechanics of controlling your character with a tracker-ball which would control your speed and direction and a single dedicated button for jumping.

The game was fast and frantic, constantly keeping you moving as each level hurled plenty of traps, level hazards and obstacles to keep you on your toes. While trying to avoid these hazards, you also be relentlessly chased by an obstacle such as a boulder, tidal wave etc that would be always be on your tail.

This arcade game was always the first introduction of both Ray the Squirrel and Mighty the Armadillo, both of which would appear in later games as either cameos or playable characters. And of course, Dr Robotnick was the main antagonist who would constantly mock/ridicule you prior to starting each stage.

SegaSonic is a fun game and I feel appreciated that I got to experience such a game back in the day. Alas, this game has never been ported officially by Sega, much to the desire and begging of fans to get this game released on modern consoles.

Did you ever get a chance to play this game?

  1. That’s an Atari Showcase cab. 😍 I used to own one for years (with a Naomi 2 inside). Sadly I never got to play SegaSonic.

  2. I’ve played the one at galloping ghost. I remember really enjoying it.

  3. I had this one in the late 90s.
