Fallout 3 [PS5] Review and Longplay [2008]

I had troubles encoding the video a few times so I ended up lowering the overall size by speeding up certain parts of the game.

I’ll add time stamps eventually to break down certain portions of the game. The 1st half we played through a few sidequests, and the 2nd half was just the primary mission.

this is probably one of my top 10 favorite games of all time. is it considered retro seeing as how it came out in 2008? either way my kids and I have decided to play it together. eventually I’ll make chapters out of all of this and hopefully some sub video tutorials as well.

This game was played on the PS5 via it’s streaming PS3 emulator.

Fallout 3 on PS5: Revisiting the Wasteland with a JRPG Enthusiast’s Eye

In the realm of post-apocalyptic role-playing games, few have left an impact quite as significant as Bethesda Game Studios’ “Fallout 3.” Released originally for PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 in 2008, its arrival on the PS5 as a backward-compatible title offers a chance to re-examine this groundbreaking game through the lens of modern hardware and a JRPG fan’s perspective. Known for its expansive open world, rich storytelling, and the innovative VATS combat system, “Fallout 3” has not only withstood the test of time but also continues to enthrall new and returning players alike with its unique blend of survival, strategy, and narrative depth.

Developer and Vision

Bethesda Game Studios, the developer behind “Fallout 3,” had already established itself as a titan in the RPG arena with successes like “The Elder Scrolls” series. With “Fallout 3,” they took the franchise in a new direction, melding their expertise in crafting open-world experiences with the dark humor and retro-futuristic setting of the original “Fallout” games.

Music and Graphics

Upon booting up the game on PS5, the first thing that resonates is the iconic soundtrack. Inon Zur’s haunting compositions, combined with the twang of 1940s and 50s inspired tracks, create an atmosphere that is both ominous and nostalgic. The music is a perfect accompaniment to the visuals, which, although a product of its time, have a certain charm when displayed on the PS5. The graphical enhancements brought about by the console’s hardware give the Capital Wasteland a crisper, more immersive feel, breathing new life into the desolate landscapes and decaying urban environments.

Gameplay and VATS

As a fan of JRPGs, the gameplay of “Fallout 3” might seem a departure from the turn-based systems of the genre. However, the VATS (Vault-Tec Assisted Targeting System) bridges this gap splendidly. VATS allows players to pause combat and target specific enemy body parts, creating a strategic layer reminiscent of choosing moves in a classic JRPG battle. This system not only adds a tactical edge to encounters but also provides cinematic flair to firefights, with slow-motion sequences accentuating critical hits.

For a JRPG aficionado, the combination of exploration, character interaction, and the aforementioned VATS combat scratches a familiar itch while presenting a fresh, innovative take on the RPG formula.

Story and Narrative Depth

The story of “Fallout 3” is a tale of survival and discovery. Emerging from Vault 101, players take on the role of the Lone Wanderer, searching for their missing father in a world ravaged by nuclear war. The narrative thrust of the game is compelling, driven by well-written quests and an array of memorable characters. The moral choices and branching paths ensure that each decision carries weight, affecting the world and its inhabitants in significant ways.

Community Reactions and Impact

At its release, “Fallout 3” was met with critical acclaim and commercial success. It was praised for its ambitious scale and the freedom it afforded players. Communities, such as the Retro Replay community, celebrated the game’s depth and the degree to which players could lose themselves in the Capital Wasteland.

“I remember booting up ‘Fallout 3’ for the first time and being completely overwhelmed by the sheer scale of it all. It was like nothing I had ever played before. The world, the characters, the stories unfolding in every corner of the Wasteland—it was a masterpiece,” recalls Jamie Patterson, a long-time member of the Retro Replay community.

As a JRPG enthusiast, the game’s VATS system offers a familiar yet distinct combat experience that, even years later, remains engaging. It’s a world that beckons for exploration, filled with stories that still resonate, and choices that continue to challenge morally and strategically. Whether it’s the haunting melody of the Ink Spots’ “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire” or the thrill of a perfectly timed VATS headshot, “Fallout 3” stands as a paragon of the RPG genre—a timeless classic that, even on the PS5, still offers an experience as rich and expansive as the day it launched.
