RetroArch v1.22.0 has been released. RetroArch serves as a multi-system emulator compatible with Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, and *BSD. Previously known as SSNES, its architecture and functionality are distinct from typical emulators, as RetroArch does not host an emulation core of its own. Instead, it interacts with libretro, a universal emulator core API. This allows RetroArch to be core agnostic, meaning it functions independently of the emulator core in operation.
At present, there are libretro implementations available for systems like SNES, NES, GBA, GB/GBC, Genesis, and even for arcade games (Final Burn Alpha).
libretro isn’t solely for emulators; a preliminary port of an open-source reimagining of Cave Story has also been adapted to libretro.
RetroArch champions modularity. The application is primarily command-line driven, making it ideal for HTPC or headless configurations. Additionally, a GUI frontend exists for RetroArch, accommodating all configuration options available within the application.
