Previously known as SSNES, its architecture and philosophy significantly differ from most emulators, as RetroArch does not include an emulation core itself. Instead, it interfaces with libretro, a universal emulator core API. This allows RetroArch to be core agnostic, meaning it operates independently of the specific emulator core in use.
Currently, there are libretro implementations for various systems such as SNES, NES, GBA, GB/GBC, Genesis, and even some arcade games (Final Burn Alpha).
Libretro is not limited to emulators; an initial port of an open source reimagining of Cave Story has also been adapted to libretro.
RetroArch champions modular design. The application can be operated via the command line, making it ideal for HTPC or headless setups. Additionally, a GUI frontend exists for RetroArch, encompassing all configuration options available within the application.
