Skylanders Swap Force [PS3] Review and Longplay [2013]

Hello Retro Gaming fans, Ryan Mcquinn here!

The toys to life concept was something I wish we had when I was a kid. Buy a toy, put it on an interactive pad and watch the toy come to life on your TV! 3 games come to mind when thinking of toys to life, Lego Dimensions, Disney Infinity and my personal favorite Skylanders. Place your chosen Skylander on the portal of power and watch that character come to life in game! Fighting against Kaos and his hoard of minions, save skylands while leveling up and learning new techniques. Todays video is a playthrough of Skylanders Swap Force, with my kids Andy and Addy playing. At one point they even use my favorite Skylander Ninjini. This one introduces Kaos’ mother Cassandra, and has characters with interchangeable parts, allowing you to mix and match looks and elements.

Skylanders Trap Team: A Retro Review

When Skylanders: Trap Team was released on the PlayStation 3 in October 2014, it was more than just another installment in the Skylanders series; it was an evolutionary step in the toys-to-life category of video games. Developed by Toys for Bob and published by Activision, Trap Team expanded upon the innovative concept of bringing physical toys into the digital world. The game was not just a commercial success but a beloved chapter in gaming history that resonated with fans of all ages. Let’s dive into the depths of what made Skylanders: Trap Team a marvel in its heyday.

Musical Symphony and Visual Delight

One of the most mesmerizing aspects of Trap Team is its music. The soundtrack, created by the acclaimed Lorne Balfe, is a symphony that beautifully encapsulates the game’s magical essence. From the whimsical melodies that accompany the Skylanders in their home base to the rousing crescendos during boss battles, the music is a high note of the gaming experience.

The graphics are equally impressive, boasting a vibrant palette that brings the world of Skylands to life with a flourish. Each level is painted with an array of bright colors and detailed textures, making every area a visual treat. The character designs are diverse and imaginative, solidifying the game’s status as a work of art.

Engaging Gameplay

Skylanders: Trap Team introduced a new mechanic that allowed players to capture defeated villains in Traptanium traps, turning enemies into allies. The ability to swap out tops and bottoms of characters to create unique combinations was a feature that truly set Trap Team apart from its predecessors, providing a customizable experience that fans adored.

As a player, I spent countless hours mixing and matching my Skylanders’ parts, experimenting with different power sets and tactical advantages. This level of customization added a layer of strategy that was both refreshing and rewarding, offering a gameplay depth that was unmatched in previous entries.

Captivating Storyline

The narrative of Trap Team is as enchanting as its gameplay. The story begins with the notorious villain, Kaos, shattering the walls of the Cloudcracker Prison, freeing the most dangerous villains in Skylands. As a Portal Master, your mission is to team up with the Trap Masters, a special group of Skylanders, to hunt down these escapees, trap them, and ultimately save the world from Kaos’s clutches.

The storytelling is done with charm and wit, featuring engaging cutscenes and voice acting that bring the characters to life. The villains themselves are memorable, each with unique quirks and dialogues that add to the game’s humor and personality.

Community and Critical Reception

Upon release, Trap Team received acclaim from both the gaming community and critics. Players were particularly impressed with the game’s innovative use of the Traptanium Portal and its backward compatibility with figures from previous Skylanders games. Critics praised its engaging gameplay, rich storytelling, and the sheer fun factor.

In the “Retro Replay” community, Trap Team is often cited as a fan favorite:
