Star Fox 64 Takes Flight on the Sega Dreamcast

Developer Jnmartin84 has pulled off another jaw-dropping feat: Star Fox 64 is now running on Sega’s Dreamcast.

Best known in Europe as Lylat Wars, the 1997 Nintendo 64 classic is one of the defining rail shooters of its era, remembered for its cinematic action, tight controls, and unforgettable voice lines. Seeing it running on Sega’s final console is something few fans could have ever imagined, but thanks to the Dreamcast’s passionate homebrew community, it has now become a reality.

Just today, footage of the initial 48-hour Dreamcast build shocked fans by showing the game already running smoothly, but the addition of full sound support marks a major milestone in the port’s development. Hearing the iconic “Do a barrel roll!” blast out of Dreamcast hardware is the kind of surreal moment that sends shivers down the spine of retro gamers everywhere, bringing two legendary systems together in a way that no one would have believed possible back in the late nineties.

What makes this all the more impressive is the speed and precision with which developer Jnmartin84 has been moving. In only a matter of days, the project has gone from a barebones proof of concept to a playable build with working audio, demonstrating not only technical skill but a deep love for the Dreamcast and its growing library of fan-made projects. If progress continues at this pace, Dreamcast owners may not have to wait long before Fox McCloud and the Star Fox team officially call Sega’s hardware home.

According to Jnmartin84, the Dreamcast build of Star Fox 64 came together in just 48 hours. While still in the early stages, it already showcases just how flexible the hardware can be in the hands of a skilled developer. Given his track record with Doom 64, Wipeout, and the in-progress Mario Kart 64 port, there is every reason to believe that Star Fox 64 will receive the same level of polish and care.

The Dreamcast may have struggled commercially in its original run, but that same openness that once enabled rampant piracy is now the reason its homebrew scene thrives. Fan developers have turned the console into a playground for ambitious ports, and Star Fox 64 is the latest proof of how far the community has come.
