SugarDS v1.5a is an Amstrad CPC emulator for the DS/DSi, supporting models like CPC 464 and 6128. Launched in 1984, the Amstrad CPC competed with the ZX Spectrum and C64 and still has a dedicated fanbase. The emulator handles .SNA, .DSK, and .CPR files, supports various cartridge functions, and includes features like full button mapping and a touch-screen keyboard. Updates in this version improve RAM support for DSi, Z80 CPU timing, and Dandanator cartridge compatibility, while also fixing a crash issue on DS-Lite. Users can enjoy a selection of homebrew games on their handheld devices.

SugarDS v1.5a has been launched. SugarDS is an emulator for the Amstrad CPC 646 and 6128, specifically designed for the DS/DSi. Introduced in 1984, the Amstrad CPC contended with the ZX Spectrum and C64 in the UK and Eastern European markets. Although it arrived later in the competition, its robust “all-in-one” engineering won over many fans. Today, the system still maintains a loyal following, along with numerous excellent homebrew games that utilize its strengths. While this emulator has its limitations, it offers sufficient capability to make most games playable on the compact handheld device, allowing you to enjoy Amstrad gaming on the move!
Key Features of SugarDS:
Emulates CPC 464 (64K) and CPC 6128 (128K) with 512K of extended RAM available (1024K for DSi).
Loads .SNA and .DSK files with a total length of up to 800K (single and double sided).
Supports Plus2CPC Cartridges for .CPR files up to 512K (note that this is not a plus/GX4000 emulator but can handle cartridge files unless they require plus features).
Dandanator Cartridge Support – compatible with Sword of Ianna, Los Amores de Brunilda, and most compilation packs. Rename files to .dan for proper loading in the emulator.
Rough emulation of CRTC Type 3 – accommodates split screen, ruptures, smooth vertical scrolling, and a fair approximation of horizontal scrolling.
Comprehensive button mapping – supports all 3 joystick buttons of the Amstrad and allows key mapping to keyboard keys.
Touch-screen interface mimicking the vibrant Amstrad keyboard from the CPC 464.
Save/Load state functionality enables you to resume your game seamlessly.
Full support for the Spanish CPC 472 model with an additional 8K of memory! ๐
Changelog for SugarDS:
DSi now offers a full 1024K of extended CPC emulated RAM that doesnโt interfere with the Disk/ROM memory areas. The DS-Lite remains with 512K of extended CPC RAM.
Enhanced Z80 CPU timing – itโs now reliable enough to eliminate the previous ‘CPU Adjust’ configuration option, which has been removed.
Boosted Dandanator support for basic ‘ROMBOX’ functionalities. Most game compilation packs are functional.
Refined disk swap so that the ‘ready’ signal is delayed slightly, enhancing functionality for Infocom games during disk swaps.
Single 16K Extended Upper ROM support – name it Sugar06.ROM and place it in /roms/bios or the emulator directory.
Added DIAGONALS as a d-pad configuration option. General configuration tidy-up.
Switched to ParaDOS 1.2 from v1.1.
1.5a hotfix implemented to resolve crashes on DS-Lite when starting a new game!
