Darklyte delivers a crisp turn-based combat experience that revolves around commanding a squad of four droids against an opposing quartet of AI-controlled machines. Each battle unfolds on a 9×9 grid peppered with metal, grass, and impassable pit tiles, forcing you to carefully consider movement options. Strategic positioning is key: grass tiles offer no special bonuses, metal tiles are sturdy but slow, and pits create natural chokepoints that both sides will vie to control.

The user interface is intuitive yet information-rich. In the top-right corner, you’ll always see your active droid’s weapon, remaining moves, and health status, while an arrow in the top-left indicates which droid you’re piloting. Four action icons—Attack, End Turn, Scan Enemy, and Use Item—sit along the left edge of the screen, allowing smooth transitions between aggressive strikes, reconnaissance, or tactical retreats. End Turn instantly hands control over to the opponent, making every decision count.

Item management adds another strategic layer. Each droid carries six one-time-use items: an Injection for energy restoration, a Microchip to grant nine extra moves, a Powerglove for boosted damage, a Shield for enhanced defense, a Target device to confuse foes, and a Skull token that tips the odds in your favor on the next attack round. When an item is used, its icon fades to dark grey, immediately signaling its depletion and forcing you to adapt on the fly.

Victory rewards you with gold and experience points for each destroyed enemy, allowing your droids to grow stronger over successive levels. Once all opposing machines fall, a staircase icon appears on the grid, leading you to deeper challenges. However, lose your commander droid and it’s game over, raising the stakes and ensuring every move is fraught with tension.
