Retro Replay Review
Gameplay
Monkeyshines! drops you into a fast-paced game of tag with mischievous monkeys scattered across a series of platforms. Up to two players control characters that can run, jump and leap over platforms to chase down the monkeys. Once you catch up to a monkey, you must press the “action” button to tag it and hurl it in any direction you choose. This simple interaction loop—chase, tag, toss—forms the core of the gameplay and keeps the momentum brisk from start to finish.

After you throw a monkey, it turns bright red and immediately tries to tag you back. If the red monkey catches you, it’s game over for your character. The goal is to tag as many monkeys as possible before both player characters are inevitably caught. Because the monkeys themselves become active pursuers, you must constantly balance aggression with evasion, weaving among the platforms and timing your jumps to avoid a quick defeat.
The game tracks the number of monkeys you’ve tagged, and once you surpass ten, the difficulty ramps up. Tagged monkeys stay red for longer periods, making them more dangerous foes that can swoop in for surprise counterattacks. If you want to push yourself or skip ahead, you can press the “+” key once to jump to the second difficulty level and twice to reach the third, bypassing the usual scoring requirements.
For players craving variety, Monkeyshines! offers four additional modes that inject fresh twists into the basic Monkey Tag formula. Tailspin! randomizes the platforms every few seconds (toggle with R and S), Shuteye! hides the platforms entirely (toggle with I and V), Monkey Chess! lets you add or remove bars to build ladders or cages by typing their coordinates, and Bananas! throws all these elements together. Each variation encourages new strategies and co-op coordination, extending the game’s replay value well beyond its core mode.
Graphics
Visually, Monkeyshines! embraces a bright, cartoony aesthetic that feels both playful and accessible. The monkeys are rendered in simple but expressive sprites that turn a vivid red when you tag them, providing clear visual feedback. The character models for the players are distinct enough to track in the chaos of a chase, and their jump and run animations convey a real sense of momentum.
The platform layouts sport clean lines and solid colors, helping you focus on the action without visual clutter. In Tailspin! mode, the platforms shuffle positions smoothly, and you always know where to look next thanks to subtle shading and motion cues. In Shuteye!, platforms vanish entirely, but the brief flashes of their outlines as you move hint at where they’re located, adding tension without causing confusion.
The user interface is minimalistic, showing only the essential information: your current monkey-tag count, difficulty level, and any toggled modes. Button prompts for actions such as tagging or toggling modes appear unobtrusively at the bottom of the screen. Overall, the presentation is functional and charming—it never distracts from the core gameplay but still brings personality to every chase.
Color choices are well considered: bright yellows and greens for safe platforms, stark reds for tagged monkeys, and muted backgrounds that recede into the distance. Even when multiple monkeys and players are zipping around the screen, you can always discern who’s safe, who’s “hot,” and where your next foothold will appear.
Story
Monkeyshines! doesn’t rely on an elaborate narrative; its appeal comes from pure arcade adrenaline rather than plot twists. You and a friend (or the single-player CPU) are essentially introduced to a whimsical jungle playground, where tagging and tossing monkeys is both a sport and a survival game. This light backdrop keeps the focus squarely on action without bogging players down in cutscenes or dialogue.
That said, the game’s premise of mischievous monkeys and competitive tag offers a playful sense of character. Each monkey behaves like a cheeky prankster—dashing from bar to bar and taking swift revenge when tagged. This give-and-take dynamic hints at a broader world of jungle hijinks, imagining that every toss and chase is part of a grand, tailored challenge set by the monkeys themselves.
In lieu of story progression, Monkeyshines! layers its modes as if they were chapters in an arcade fable: Tailspin! shakes up the terrain, Shuteye! tests your trust in instincts, Monkey Chess! lets you rewrite the rules, and Bananas! whips them all into delightful chaos. These variations create a sense of unfolding drama that replaces a traditional storyline with evolving gameplay mechanics.
For players who prioritize narrative, the lack of a defined storyline might seem like a drawback. However, the game’s strong emphasis on reactive animations, playful sound effects, and escalating difficulty creates its own emergent narrative—one where every session tells a different tale of daring leaps, last-second escapes, and triumphant tag counts.
Overall Experience
Monkeyshines! offers a tight, addictive gameplay loop that’s immediately gratifying and endlessly replayable. The core Monkey Tag mode is easy to pick up but demands finesse as the monkeys grow more relentless. The additional modes breathe fresh life into each play session, ensuring that co-op or solo runs never feel repetitive.
The game’s visual clarity and responsive controls make every jump and throw feel precise, while the simple UI lets you focus completely on outwitting the monkeys. Difficulty scaling is smartly handled so that beginners can get their feet wet before facing red-hot primates, and veterans can skip straight to the chaos with a couple of key presses.
Despite its arcade roots, Monkeyshines! manages to foster a sense of strategy, especially in Monkey Chess! mode, where building your own ladders and cages adds a tactical sandbox element. Tailspin! and Shuteye! keep seasoned players on their toes, requiring quick reflexes and mental mapping. Bananas! mode then crowns the experience by combining all these twists into one exhilarating challenge.
In sum, Monkeyshines! delivers a playful, adrenaline-packed romp through a world of bouncing primates and shifting platforms. Whether you’re seeking a lighthearted party game or a rigorous test of reflexes and planning, it manages to satisfy both crowds with equal measures of fun and flair.
