Near and a continuing open-source community
Near, formerly known as byuu, began bsnes on October 14, 2004 while pursuing more faithful emulation of Super Nintendo hardware. The project became closely associated with accuracy research, cartridge preservation, and documentation of unusual hardware behavior.
After bsnes expanded into the multi-system higan project, Near revived bsnes as a standalone SNES emulator in 2018. The official GitHub repository now continues through community maintenance and contributions.

History and legacy
bsnes began as an attempt to reproduce the SNES more faithfully than contemporary emulators. Its emphasis on timing, enhancement chips, and real-hardware behavior made it influential beyond its own user base and helped raise expectations for emulator accuracy.
The project became higan in 2012 as additional systems were added. A standalone bsnes revival returned in 2018–2019 with a focused interface and performance improvements. Stable version 115 remains available while community nightlies continue development.

bsnes setup guide
- Download an official build. Choose the package for Windows, macOS, Linux, or FreeBSD.
- Extract the archive. Use a dedicated folder for the program, settings, saves, screenshots, and states.
- Configure input. Map the D-pad, A, B, X, Y, L, R, Start, and Select controls.
- Keep default timing first. Confirm normal video, audio, and input before adding shaders, run-ahead, overclocking, or scaling changes.
- Load a legal test image. Use homebrew software or a personal cartridge dump to verify playback and saving.
- Add optional features gradually. Enable soft patches, filters, HD Mode 7, or latency tools one at a time.
