GENESIS MEGA DRIVE EMULATOR

helios

Helios — a Java-based, multi-system emulator originally created for the Sega Mega Drive / Genesis with added support for 32X, Master System / Game Gear, SG-1000, ColecoVision, MSX v1 and NES.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why use Helios?

Helios is a single Java application that targets Sega 16-bit emulation first (Genesis/Mega Drive and 32X) while also including emulation for several related retro systems. Because it’s implemented in Java and distributed under GPL‑3.0, it’s cross‑platform (Windows/Linux) and intended for users who want an easy single-binary Java emulator with active development notes and frequent incremental releases.

BEST FOR

Best for

Tinkers, developers and hobbyists who want a Java-based multi-system emulator focused on Sega 16-bit hardware (including 32X) and who can run recent Java runtimes. Also useful when you want an open-source project with detailed changelogs and active fixes for VDP, FM and CPU timing quirks.

The people behind helios

History and development

Helios began as a Sega Mega Drive/Genesis emulator and grew into a multi-system emulator. The project’s repository documents extensive revision history and release notes (many numbered release entries in HISTORY.md) showing continuous development and additions such as Sega 32X integration (merged in 2023 according to the project changelog), MD/VDP fixes, 68k and Z80 improvements, and ongoing work on Mega CD / Sega CD. The README credits several upstream and third‑party cores (m68k core authors, Z80 core, Nuked-OPN2 YM2612 audio core, JavaGear components, etc.) and notes Helios was initially based on the Genefusto emulator. The codebase uses Gradle and ships with launch scripts and bundled libraries in a releases ZIP.

What helios supports

helios setup guide

Setup note: Helios is distributed as a Java application (zip release). The repository README and HISTORY detail requirements and platform-specific launcher scripts. Below are concrete steps to get the official Helios release running on Windows and Linux.

  1. 1) Get the official release: Download the latest release zip from the project's GitHub releases page (look for helios-<version>.zip). Do not download games, BIOS or commercial firmware from untrusted sources—Helios does not include commercial ROMs or proprietary BIOS files.
  2. 2) Install a compatible Java runtime: Helios README states it requires Java 21+ (the HISTORY changelog earlier referenced Java 17+ in past releases). Install a modern OpenJDK runtime matching the README requirement (OpenJDK 21 or newer). Ensure java is on your PATH and java -version reports the expected runtime.
  3. 3) Extract the release and inspect contents: Extract helios-<version>.zip to a folder. The archive contains launcher scripts (launcher.bat for Windows, launcher.sh for Linux), libs, res, and a launcher JAR. Review any CREDITS, LICENSE and README files before running.
  4. 4) Run on Windows: Double-click launcher.bat or open a Command Prompt in the extracted folder and run launcher.bat. If execution fails, run java -jar <helios-launcher-jar>.jar verifying the jar name shown in the release. Use the launcher shortcut scripts only after confirming the Java runtime path if necessary.
  5. 5) Run on Linux: In a terminal: chmod +x launcher.sh then ./launcher.sh. If the script references a specific java path, edit it or run java -jar <helios-launcher-jar>.jar manually. The project previously required Java 17 in older releases; current README requests Java 21+ so ensure your runtime meets that requirement.
  6. 6) ROM loading and bios notes: Load cartridge ROM files using the emulator’s open/load dialogs (the UI shows a ROM info dialog and region flags). For 32X or Mega CD (Sega CD) features that require homebrew or optional BIOS files, consult the project's notes: HISTORY and README mention defaults for homebrew BIOS for 32X and work-in-progress Mega CD support. Do not expect commercial BIOS or commercial game files to be included; obtain any required BIOS legally if the project documentation mandates them.
  7. 7) Controller input and libraries: Helios bundles jinput libraries in some releases (HISTORY notes inclusion). If controller detection fails, ensure jinput native libraries are present in the lib folder and try running with elevated permissions or from a terminal to see startup logs. The README and HISTORY reference default keyboard mapping files and a stored last-opened file feature.
  8. 8) Troubleshooting and logging: If you encounter crashes or performance issues, run the launcher from a terminal to capture stdout/stderr. The project's HISTORY details many targeted fixes by subsystem (VDP, sound, 68k timing). When filing an issue on the repository, include the Helios version, Java runtime output, platform, steps to reproduce and the ROM header info shown by the emulator.

Software reminder: Helios is GPL-3.0 licensed and requires a compliant Java runtime. It does not include commercial ROMs or proprietary BIOS files—acquiring those is your responsibility and may be subject to copyright.
