NES / FAMICOM EMULATOR
Nestopia UE
The maintained cross-platform continuation of Nestopia, pairing cycle-accurate NES and Famicom emulation with a practical standalone interface and a widely available libretro core.

WHY IT MATTERS
Nestopia accuracy on current systems
Nestopia UE preserves the original emulator’s careful CPU, PPU, mapper, and audio work while maintaining the code for modern Windows, macOS, Linux, BSD, and libretro environments.
BEST FOR
Faithful everyday NES play
Use it when you want broad cartridge compatibility, Famicom Disk System support, expansion audio, save states, controller mapping, and a restrained set of display options.
The people behind Nestopia UE
A maintained continuation of Martin Freij’s Nestopia
The original Nestopia was created by Martin Freij. The Undead Edition continued the project after its original development period, with R. Danbrook and community contributors maintaining the cross-platform core and standalone interface under the GPL.
What Nestopia UE supports
- NES and Famicom cartridge images, including a wide range of licensed and unlicensed mappers.
- Famicom Disk System software when supplied with the required firmware dumped from owned hardware.
- Battery saves, save states, controller remapping, cheats, screenshots, palettes, filters, and archive loading.
- Expansion audio and regional timing for NTSC, PAL, and Dendy-style software.

Before you begin: Nestopia UE does not include commercial games or Nintendo firmware. Use cartridge images and firmware dumped from hardware you own.
- Download the current standalone release for your platform, install a trusted operating-system package, or select Nestopia UE in RetroArch’s Core Downloader.
- Open a clean NES file dumped from your cartridge. Leave region detection and timing on automatic for the first run.
- Map the directional pad, A, B, Start, and Select buttons. Disable analog-to-digital shortcuts if they cause unwanted diagonal input.
- Choose a palette and integer scaling mode that fit your display, then test scrolling before enabling NTSC filters or shaders.
- For Famicom Disk System games, place your legally dumped firmware in the directory named by your frontend and confirm the expected filename in its documentation.
- Keep ordinary battery saves as permanent progress. Use save states for temporary checkpoints and back them up before emulator upgrades.
- If a game has visual or sound problems, restore default timing and filters, confirm the ROM dump, and check whether the title uses an unusual mapper or expansion-audio chip.
Software reminder: Build your library from cartridges and disks you own.
