NINTENDO DS 3DS 2 EMULATOR
Panda3DS
Panda3DS is an open-source, high-level emulation (HLE) Nintendo 3DS emulator written in C++ that provides desktop builds for Windows, macOS and Linux and has active build tooling for Android and a libretro core. It aims to run commercial 3DS software via HLE implementations rather than full low-level firmware emulation.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why use Panda3DS?
Panda3DS is a modern, active HLE-focused 3DS emulator that provides ready builds and continuous integration, an experimental libretro core, and growing compatibility improvements. It is intended for users who want an alternative to other 3DS emulators and prefer HLE approaches and active development.
BEST FOR
Best for
Users who want an actively developed open-source 3DS emulator with desktop builds, experimental Android support, and a libretro core; developers who want a C++ codebase to inspect, contribute to, or build themselves.
The people behind Panda3DS
History and status
Panda3DS began as a curiosity project and evolved into a more-capable HLE 3DS emulator. The project maintains source and releases on GitHub, publishes downloadable builds from a project website, and runs CI workflows that produce Windows, macOS, Linux, and Android artifacts. The project has continued receiving updates, pull requests and issues activity. It implements HLE subsystems rather than relying on dumped 3DS firmware, and in later development added HLE audio, a desktop UI, and a libretro core. Panda3DS is still under active development and considered an early-stage emulator with ongoing compatibility and performance work.
What Panda3DS supports
- Nintendo 3DS (software via user-supplied ROMs/CIAs/CCI)
- Windows (desktop builds)
- macOS (desktop builds)
- Linux (desktop builds)
- Android (experimental builds)
- Libretro core (provided by the project)
Download and availability
OFFICIAL DOWNLOADS
Get Panda3DS
Official binary builds and source are available from the project's GitHub releases page and the project's download page. Do not expect firmware, console-supplied files (system software), or commercial game content to be included with downloads — those must be provided by the user and are subject to copyright and local law.

Setup note: This setup guide covers downloading official builds, prerequisites, running the emulator, building from source, and the libretro core. Follow the project's official documentation and release notes for the most current details.
- 1) Get the official builds: Visit the project download page or the GitHub releases page to get a recent build. Pre-built desktop packages are provided for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the site points to the latest GitHub release artifacts. If you prefer the libretro core or Android builds, those are also available via the project's releases/CI artifacts.
- 2) Verify prerequisites: Desktop builds: a recent x86_64 CPU and up-to-date libraries for your OS. On Linux ensure required dependencies for the supplied binary (GL/Vulkan drivers or SDL/OpenAL as indicated in the release notes). Android builds require an Android device and the matching APK if provided. Building from source requires CMake, a C++17-capable compiler, and the libraries listed in the project's README.
- 3) Running a downloaded build: Unpack the downloaded archive and run the provided executable/binary for your platform. On first run, configure directories for user content (games, saves). Panda3DS does not include commercial games, firmware, or system files — you must provide your own legally obtained files. Check the in-app UI or README for where to place ROM/CIAs and save files.
- 4) Building from source (desktop): Clone the official repository, create a build directory, then run CMake and your chosen generator. Example workflow (adjust for your platform): git clone <repo> && mkdir build && cd build && cmake .. -DCMAKE_BUILD_TYPE=Release -DENABLE_USER_BUILD=ON && cmake –build . –config Release. Ensure you have dependencies and development headers installed as documented in the repo README. The project uses CI workflows that show required toolchains and environment variables in the repository actions if you need reference.
- 5) Libretro core and RetroArch: The project offers a libretro core upstream. To use it, obtain the core artifact from releases or build the core from source with the libretro target if provided. Place the resulting core in your RetroArch cores directory and load 3DS content via RetroArch. Check the project's README or CI artifacts for exact build targets and core names.
- 6) Android builds: The project repository contains CI workflows for Android builds. If an Android APK is provided in the releases or CI artifacts, download and sideload it on your device. If you need to build locally, follow the repository’s Android build instructions and ensure Android NDK, SDK, and required toolchains are installed.
- 7) Configuration and performance tips: Use the emulator UI to configure graphics backend (OpenGL/Vulkan if available), audio, input mapping, and display scaling. HLE emulators may need per-game tweaks; check issue tracker entries or release notes for game-specific workarounds. If you encounter crashes or functional regressions, consult the project's issues and CI logs for similar reports before filing a new issue.
- 8) Legal and BIOS/firmware notes: Panda3DS is HLE-focused and does not ship official Nintendo firmware, keys, or commercial game files. You are responsible for acquiring system files and games legally. Do not upload or share copyrighted firmware/roms in public project issue trackers or repositories.
Software reminder: Always use official project releases or build from the repository. Follow the project README and release notes; do not expect bundled firmware or commercial games with the emulator.
