NINTENDO DS 3DS 2 EMULATOR
S8DS
S8DS is an open-source Sega 8-bit series emulator (Master System / Game Gear / SG-1000 and related systems) built to run on Nintendo DS / DSi / 3DS homebrew.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why S8DS exists
S8DS provides a portable Sega 8‑bit experience on Nintendo DS hardware. It targets DS/DSi/3DS homebrew users who want to play Master System, Game Gear, SG-1000 and several related 8‑bit systems directly from a flashcart or nds-bootstrap/TWiLight style loader.
BEST FOR
What S8DS does best
Accurate-enough Z80-based Sega 8‑bit emulation tailored for the limitations and controls of the Nintendo DS family, with multiple display scaling modes, save-state and NVRAM handling, and configurable BIOS selection for systems that need it.
The people behind S8DS
History & upstream
The project is maintained on GitHub by Fredrik Ahlström (FluBBaOfWard). The repository includes source, README, and a History.txt which documents development activity; releases are published in the repository's releases section. The README identifies the project as 'S8DS V1.1.9' and credits contributors and third-party references for the Z80 core, VDP and sound information. Community lists and DS homebrew directories have long referenced S8DS as a DS Game Gear/Master System emulator. I relied primarily on the project's README and repository for feature and setup details; community pages provide corroboration of the project's target (DS/DSi/3DS) and usage context.
What S8DS supports
- Sega SG-1000 / SG-1000 II
- Sega SC-3000
- Sega Mark III
- Sega Master System (J, 1 & 2)
- Sega Game Gear
- Sega System-E (arcade/System-E MAME zips supported where applicable)

Setup note: This guide covers obtaining S8DS, preparing a DS family device environment, BIOS handling, ROM placement, and practical tips specific to running S8DS on DS/DSi/3DS homebrew loaders (flashcarts or nds-bootstrap/TWiLight Menu++). It is derived from the project's README and repository files.
- 1) Obtain the emulator: Download the official release or clone the repository from the project's GitHub (see sources). If you want a prebuilt .nds, pick the most recent release asset from the repository's Releases page. Alternatively clone the repo and build from source using the toolchain recommended by the repo.
- 2) Prepare your DS homebrew loader: S8DS runs on standard DS flashcarts and through nds-bootstrap/TWiLight Menu++ on 3DS. Copy the S8DS.nds file (or the .nds release) to the root of your card or to your loader's games/data area as you normally do for other homebrew. NOTE: depending on your flashcart or loader you may need to DLDI-patch the .nds binary; the README mentions DLDI in its usage notes.
- 3) Create the S8DS data directory: Create a directory named S8DS either at the card root or in your loader's data directory (the README gives an example like h:\data\S8DS). This is where S8DS stores settings, save files and exported BIOS selections.
- 4) ROM & BIOS placement: Place Sega 8‑bit ROMs in a folder anywhere on the card; S8DS supports up to 768 games per folder and filename limits (README: max 127 characters). The emulator accepts zipped ROMs (deflate) as well as raw ROM files. Some systems (e.g., certain MSX, Coleco, GameGear or Master System configurations) may require BIOS files; the README exposes BIOS selection options in the Machine -> Bios Settings menu. The emulator will not include any commercial BIOS or game ROMs — you must provide those yourself and respect copyright.
- 5) Run and configure: Launch S8DS from your loader. The GUI is opened with L+R or by touching the screen. Review Options (controller, display, machine, settings) and set Machine->Region/Bios/Machine mode as needed for the ROM. Display options include unscaled, scaled-to-fit and aspect-corrected modes; Game Gear upscaler modes are available for better fullscreen rendering on DS screens. Save your settings before leaving the menu.
- 6) Save handling & patches: S8DS supports save states and NVRAM/EEPROM saving. There are menu entries to Save NVRAM and autosave options. The README notes incomplete EEPROM support for some Game Gear titles. The emulator can also load IPS patches from the UI.
- 7) Advanced / troubleshooting: If a ROM fails to boot, check the Machine->Use Bios setting and verify you have the proper BIOS where required. If using nds-bootstrap/TWiLight, ensure you are using the configured option to run FluBBa emulators (some loader builds provide compatibility settings). If your flashcart requires DLDI and you get tile or file access errors, create a DLDI-patched binary per your cart's DLDI instructions. Use the README's debug options (fps, disable sprites/background, step frame) when diagnosing rendering or timing issues.
Software reminder: S8DS does not include commercial games, firmware or BIOS files. Obtain ROMs and BIOS files only where you have legal rights to them. Use compatible DS homebrew loaders (flashcart or nds-bootstrap/TWiLight) and follow their documentation for installing .nds homebrew.
