The people behind Xenia Canary

History and status

Xenia Canary is a rapid-release, community-focused branch of the Xenia Xbox 360 emulator. It publishes frequent prebuilt binaries and accepts experimental changes that may not be in the upstream master branch. The project publishes official releases on GitHub and maintains documentation and a quickstart guide on the broader Xenia site. Canary builds are explicitly experimental: they can add support or fixes quickly but may also introduce regressions. Community resources and compatibility lists are maintained separately and compatibility is title-dependent. The project remains active through commits and regular GitHub releases; community-maintained pages also track compatibility and Linux build availability.

What Xenia Canary supports

  • Xbox 360 games (XEX / default.xex / folder-based titles)
  • Windows x86-64 (primary)
  • Community / prebuilt Linux binaries (community-maintained or provided in some releases)
  • XInput controllers

Xenia Canary setup guide

Setup note: Practical setup checklist and steps for running Xenia Canary on a modern PC. This guide focuses on the official Canary builds and practical requirements gathered from the project's documentation and release notes.

  1. 1) Obtain the official Canary build: Download the latest Canary archive from the project's GitHub Releases page for xenia-canary. Use the release assets (zip/7z) listed in the release entry; avoid third-party repositories unless they explicitly mirror the GitHub release and provide a verifiable hash.
  2. 2) Extract to its own folder: Extract the downloaded archive into a dedicated folder (for example C:\Emulators\Xenia-Canary). Canary is distributed as a portable archive: no installer is required. Keep each Canary build in its own folder if you want to retain older builds for comparison.
  3. 3) Ensure platform dependencies: On Windows, install the latest Visual C++ redistributables appropriate to the build (x64). Canary builds typically target modern Windows versions and require a GPU with up-to-date drivers supporting Direct3D 12 features. Some builds and community notes mention DirectX Agility or recent Windows platform updates — if a build fails to initialize the D3D backend, verify your Windows updates and GPU driver versions.
  4. 4) Running a game: Drop a game folder or XEX file onto the xenia_canary.exe (or use the command line). Xenia will attempt to open the title; use the emulator's logs to diagnose failures. Xenia's wiki and quickstart pages explain the command-line options for launching titles and setting emulator options.
  5. 5) Controls, options and configuration: XInput controllers are supported by default; map other controllers via middleware or by using an XInput wrapper. Configure options via command-line flags or the provided config files in the Canary folder. For title-specific tweaks, Canary supports per-game configuration files in its config directory (game-title .toml entries) as used by community management tools.
  6. 6) Linux builds and experimental platforms: Some releases include native Linux builds or community-provided Linux artifacts. These are less official than the Windows releases; follow the release notes and community documentation carefully when using Linux builds and ensure you meet the distro-specific dependencies listed by the build.
  7. 7) Troubleshooting and compatibility tracking: Check the project's compatibility tracker and GitHub issue threads for title-specific guidance. Because Canary is experimental, regressions can appear; if you encounter new issues try a different Canary build or the master/stable branch builds for comparison. Use logs and the GitHub issue tracker to report reproducible bugs.

Software reminder: Xenia does not include commercial games, Xbox firmware, or any proprietary Xbox Live components. You must legally own game files and any required firmware; Xenia's documentation states it does not require official Xbox 360 system files for general operation.
