Hello Retro Gaming fans, Ryan Mcquinn here!
Based on one of my favorite movies of all time, Gremlins 2 The New Batch is a short but challenging game. Join Gizmo as he finds his way through a futuristic office building (Well, futuristic for the 90’s that is.) As Gizmo makes his way through he not only has to face dangerous obstacles, he must also defeat the hoards of Gremlins let loose into the building! If you haven’t seen the movie by the way, it’s a must watch! My favorite Gremlin was the Female one that keeps trying to kiss the office worker.
Gremlins 2: The New Batch – A Retro NES Classic Review
As the glow of the television flickers, a familiar tune begins to play, and pixels form the image of a small, furry creature on the screen. This is not the start of a beloved ’80s film, but the opening to “Gremlins 2: The New Batch” for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES), a game that, even after decades, remains a standout example of movie-to-game adaptations done right.
Developer’s Touch: A Sunsoft Signature
Developed by Sunsoft, the company behind such NES classics as “Blaster Master” and “Batman,” “Gremlins 2” was a testament to the developer’s ability to push the NES hardware. Sunsoft was adept at creating games that were not only technically impressive but also full of personality.
The game’s graphics were a major highlight, with colorful, detailed sprites that brought the Gremlins’ world to life. Sunsoft managed to capture the quirky and slightly dark aesthetic of the film, translating it into a vibrant 8-bit world.
Symphony in 8-Bit: The Music of Gremlins 2
The soundtrack, crafted by the talented composer Naoki Kodaka, is often cited as one of the NES’s most memorable scores. It utilized the hardware’s audio capabilities to create a series of tracks that were both catchy and fitting for the game’s various environments.
Gameplay Mechanics: A Gizmo’s Journey
Playing as Gizmo, the player navigates through six levels of Gremlins-infested territory. Unlike many action games of the time, “Gremlins 2” featured an isometric perspective, giving the game a pseudo-3D feel. This, combined with responsive controls, created a gameplay experience that was unique for its time.
Gizmo could pick up and use various items and weapons, such as pencils and paper clips, to defend himself against the gremlins. These weapons could be upgraded, providing a sense of progression and strategy to the gameplay.
Narrative: Following the Film with a Twist
The game loosely follows the movie’s plot, with Gizmo setting out to stop the Gremlin outbreak in the Clamp Center skyscraper. Between levels, cutscenes help narrate the story, a rarity for NES games that added depth to the experience.
Public Perception and Community Reactions
Upon release, “Gremlins 2” garnered praise for its fidelity to the film’s setting and characters. Many players were delighted by the game’s challenging yet fair gameplay. It was the kind of title that prompted discussions in school playgrounds and early internet forums.
A Retro Replay community member, Michael “8BitWizard” Thompson, said:
“Gremlins 2 wasn’t just a game; it was an adventure. Sunsoft didn’t just make a game that was fun to play; they created an experience that stayed true to the movie while giving us something completely new.”
