Air Contra

There was a time when you didn’t need a battle pass, a seasonal event, or a dozen daily challenges to enjoy an online shooter. You just needed a controller, a few friends, and a good lobby. And for me, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare represented the absolute peak of that experience on Xbox 360. On 5 November 2007, Infinity Ward released Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, taking the franchise out of World War II and dropping it into the modern age. And what a change it was. I’d already enjoyed the Call of Duty series, and I’d logged hundreds of hours playing Call of Duty 3 online. Those were great times, and I had no particular complaints about the traditional formula. But Modern Warfare changed practically everything. And for a while, it was glorious. A New Kind of War Gone were the familiar battlefields of World War II. Instead, we had contemporary weapons, modern military equipment, and fictional conflicts that felt considerably closer to home. The multiplayer introduced several features that would eventually become staples of the franchise. Create-a-Class: Customize weapons, attachments, equipment, and abilities instead of relying entirely on predefined soldier classes. Perks: Abilities like Stopping Power, Juggernaut, and Martyrdom added another layer of strategy to multiplayer. Killstreak rewards: Three consecutive kills earned a UAV, five brought an airstrike, and seven unleashed an attack helicopter. Persistent progression: Earn experience, unlock weapons and equipment, complete challenges, and eventually enter Prestige Mode to start the climb again. These were impressive additions, and they gave players plenty of reasons to keep coming back. But they also changed the nature of online competition. Sometimes I miss the simplicity of the older games, where you picked a class, joined a match, and everybody started with roughly the same equipment and opportunities. No worrying about unlocking levels or Prestige. No grinding through challenges just to get the equipment you wanted. Sure, player skill still mattered enormously in Modern Warfare, but perks, unlocks, and customized loadouts introduced advantages that simply hadn’t been part of the older experience. It made multiplayer more interesting. It also made it more complicated. And I’m still not convinced every step in that direction was an improvement. These days, it feels like the more you play, the bigger your potential advantage. The Campaign Was Short. The Memories Weren’t. Of course, multiplayer wasn’t the only reason Call of Duty 4 became such a phenomenon. That campaign! It wasn’t particularly long, but my God, was it good*. From the opening assault on a cargo ship in “Crew Expendable”, complete with a desperate escape as the vessel sinks, the game rarely gave you a moment to relax. Then there was “Death From Above,” which put you behind the weapons of an AC-130 gunship, providing aerial support to troops on the ground. “All Ghillied Up” took us into the abandoned ruins of Pripyat for one of the most memorable stealth missions in shooter history. Crawling through the grass as enemy soldiers and vehicles passed dangerously close was a completely different kind of tension. And who could forget “Shock and Awe” and its devastating aftermath? The campaign wasn’t afraid to surprise players, occasionally reminding us that even a seemingly successful mission could end in catastrophe. Captain Price, Soap MacTavish, and the rest of the cast helped turn the experience into something resembling a military action thriller. It was fast, intense, cinematic, and wonderfully paced. Sometimes a short campaign that knows exactly what it wants to accomplish is better than a sprawling adventure that overstays its welcome. And Modern Warfare absolutely understood that. My favorite online maps were Backlot, Crash, District, and Strike. I always preferred the smaller-to-medium-sized urban environments, where the action was fast and there was plenty of opportunity for close-quarters combat. Give me narrow streets, buildings to fight through, and enemies around every corner. I’ll take that over sprawling, sniper-friendly designs any day. Those maps suited the way I liked to play, and with a good group of friends in the lobby, I could spend all night running through them without getting bored. The Xbox Live Era I Miss But when I think about Call of Duty 4, I don’t necessarily think about the individual missions, the maps, or the multiplayer mechanics first. I think about the people. The friends, the lobbies, the conversations, and the feeling of being part of something exciting. There was an energy to online gaming during those Xbox 360 years that’s difficult to describe to someone who wasn’t there. You’d sign on, find your friends, jump into a game, and suddenly several hours had disappeared. It wasn’t always polite. It wasn’t always friendly. And the public lobbies could be downright ridiculous -- and that’s an understatement. Kids today wouldn't last an hour. But it was entertaining. And it was memorable. And sometimes I think Modern Warfare arrived right around the beginning of the end of that particular era. Online gaming was becoming bigger, more mainstream, and more commercially valuable. Publishers were beginning to recognize just how much money could be made by keeping players invested in a single game for months or years. Eventually, progression systems grew into seasonal content, battle passes, elaborate reward structures, and an almost endless collection of things players were encouraged to unlock. And somewhere along the way, I think we lost something. The industry became more concerned with retaining players, appealing to every possible audience, and minimizing risks. Too often, games started feeling like products designed by committees rather than experiences created by people with something interesting to offer. I’m not suggesting everything was better in 2007. We certainly had our share of terrible games, obnoxious players, and questionable business decisions. But the online experience felt different. Less managed. Less concerned with keeping you on a treadmill. And more about simply having fun with your friends. Maybe some of that is nostalgia. But I don’t think all of it is. Nineteen Years Later I played several Call of Duty games after Modern Warfare, and some were genuinely good. But none of them quite captured that same intensity, excitement, or sense of community for me. Part of that was the game itself. Infinity Ward had created something special, blending an excellent campaign with multiplayer that fundamentally changed the franchise. But part of it was the moment in gaming history. The Xbox 360, the old Xbox Live lobbies, the friends, and the freedom to jump online without feeling obligated to complete another list of chores. You can’t patch that experience back into existence. You can’t sell it as downloadable content. And you certainly can’t unlock it through a battle pass. For me, Call of Duty 4 wasn’t just one of the best shooters of its generation.
