Sylphia -1993 Review and Longplay

Sylphia – A Mythical 8-Bit Shoot ’em Up That Still Delivers Fun

The TurboGrafx-CD was home to some great shoot ’em ups back in the day, and Sylphia stands out as one of the more unique entries in the system’s library. Developed by Compile and released in 1992, Sylphia is a vertical scroller that feels heavily inspired by the NES classic Legendary Wings, and that’s a very good thing.

In Sylphia, you take to the skies as a winged warrior named Paris, armed with a trusty bow. Your mission is to ascend Mount Olympus across 8 mythological-themed stages, taking down hoards of wacky mythological beasts from Greek lore along the way.

The stages stick to a pretty standard vertical shmup format, but each one has a cool visual theme pulled from Greek myths. You’ll fight through realms based on Medusa, the Minotaur, Hydra and more. The enemy designs also fit the mythical motifs, making each stage feel fresh.

Gameplay-wise, Sylphia keeps it simple – shoot enemies, avoid bullets, and blast bosses. There are some mid-stage mini bosses, extra lives and power-ups to grab, and a few minor diversions like brief horizontal scrolling sections. But at its core, Sylphia is pure retro shoot ’em up action.

The controls are smooth and responsive, though definitely retro-stiff. And while the 16-bit graphics are definitely dated, the sprites are large and colorful. The mythological enemies have goofy charm to them too.

The chiptune soundtrack also delivers some catchy tunes that fit the mythic mood. The Medusa stage tune, in particular, is an earworm.

At only 8 stages, Sylphia is fairly short. But it provides solid old-school shooting challenge, especially on higher difficulties. The mythological theming gives the stages personality beyond just shooting at stuff. And there’s enough variety in power-ups and enemy patterns to keep you engaged as you ascend towards Zeus.

Sylphia may feel basic compared to newer shmups, but as a retro TurboGrafx-CD release, it delivered fun mythic shooting in 1992. Fans of Legendary Wings or old-school vertical scrollers should give Sylphia’s wings a try for some nostalgic Greek carnage. The mythic stages and foes provide plenty of 16-bit entertainment, even if the gameplay doesn’t particularly stand out from the pack.

Overall, Sylphia is a solid retro shmup that soars on its mythological charm and gameplay simplicity. Greek mythology buffs or TurboGrafx fans will especially get a kick out of this old-school vertical scroller.
