Spills & Fills

Spills & Fills turns a simple schoolroom idea into a surprisingly focused VIC-20 challenge: pick up the right beaker with a crane, fill it at the faucet, and pour carefully until every target beaker is full. You are chasing two competing goals at once—fewest fills and least spilled water—so success comes from planning rather than merely finishing.

It is a narrow educational game, but an honest one. Younger players who enjoy repeating a task until they can improve a score may find its proportion puzzles satisfying, especially once the second difficulty level starts mixing different beaker shapes as well as sizes.

Gameplay

The first few minutes of Spills & Fills are immediately understandable: move the crane, take a master beaker to the faucet, then tip its water into the object beakers you need to fill. The catch is that “done” is not the same as “well done.” Every unnecessary refill and every spill sits against your result, turning an elementary task into a small efficiency puzzle.

That push and pull is where the game earns its value. You have to look at the target beakers, judge how much water they need, and decide which master beaker makes the most sense before committing. A careless pour can still move you toward completion, but it weakens the score you were trying to protect. For a child learning proportion and coordination, that immediate consequence is far more useful than a dry drill.

The two difficulty levels are a sensible step up. Level 1 keeps the object beakers the same shape while changing their sizes, letting you get comfortable with volume comparisons. Level 2 adds different shapes into the mix, asking you to make those judgments with less visual uniformity. It is still one repeated activity, so the game depends heavily on whether you enjoy trimming mistakes from run to run.

The side-view play area keeps the important objects in front of you: the crane, faucet, master beakers, and object beakers. Watching water handling through that simple arrangement fits the game’s practical, hands-on lesson.

Story

Spills & Fills finds its tiny story in the task itself. At the start, a collection of empty object beakers presents a clear problem; by the end, every one must be full. That straightforward before-and-after gives each attempt a satisfying sense of completion.

The tension comes from your own decisions rather than a cast or dramatic detours. Will you use one more fill to avoid a risky pour, or gamble on a closer measurement and risk spilling? That is enough context for a game built around learning by doing.

Because the objective never wanders, it remains easy for its intended younger audience to follow. You always know what you are trying to accomplish, and the score gives the final result meaning beyond simply filling the last beaker.

Overall Experience

Spills & Fills is most successful when you treat it as a compact skill exercise with a score-chasing edge. It makes proportion visible and tactile: you are not just told that quantities differ, you have to manage them with a crane and beakers, then live with the waste from an inaccurate attempt.

The limitation is equally plain. There is only one central loop, and it will wear out quickly if you need constant new goals or variety. The second difficulty level improves the challenge, but it does not transform the basic routine. A child who likes careful, repeatable tasks may stick with it; anyone impatient with refinement will likely finish a few rounds and move on.

For its age range, the game’s lesson and its challenge point in the same direction, which is exactly what an educational game should do. Give it a chance if you want a direct, score-driven way to practice judging amounts and controlling a simple action. The payoff is modest but real: a better run feels earned because fewer spills and fills mean you actually solved the problem more cleanly.
