WHY IT MATTERS

Why this core

Handy is a mature Atari Lynx emulator core included in the Libretro core library. It provides a small, focused Lynx implementation that runs Lynx images and integrates with libretro frontends features such as core options, save states, rewind and controller remapping.

BEST FOR

Best for

Users who want a simple, lightweight Lynx implementation inside RetroArch or other libretro frontends where the core-provided emulation and frontend features (save states, screenshots, rewind) are preferred over other Lynx ports.

The people behind Handy

History and provenance

Handy is named after the original Handy project name used during the Atari Lynx's development. The libretro 'Handy' core is a port/packaging of the Handy emulator adapted to the libretro API; the libretro documentation and repository attribute the core to K. Wilkins and list the core under the zlib license. Libretro's Handy core has been maintained as part of the Libretro core set and appears in the official Libretro core lists and documentation.

What Handy supports

  • Atari Lynx (.lnx)
  • Run inside RetroArch and other libretro frontends
  • Save states, screenshots, rewind, netplay (state based, not link-cable)
  • Core options (display rotation, etc.)

Handy setup guide

Setup note: Practical setup notes — verified steps to run Lynx content with the Handy libretro core in RetroArch (or another libretro frontend). This guide assumes you legally own any game files you use and will not provide or include any BIOS or copyrighted game data.

  1. 1) Install a libretro frontend (RetroArch recommended): Install RetroArch for your platform (Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, etc.). Use the official RetroArch distribution for your OS or your platform's package manager — RetroArch provides the libretro frontend that loads Handy as a core.
  2. 2) Download or install the Handy core: Open RetroArch, go to Online Updater → Core Updater and choose 'Atari – Lynx (Handy)' from the cores list to download and install the Handy core automatically. Alternatively, use the libretro core download/build instructions from Libretro's documentation and the libretro-handy repository if you need to build manually.
  3. 3) Obtain the Lynx boot image (lynxboot.img) and place it in the frontend's system directory: Handy requires a Lynx boot image named exactly lynxboot.img placed in RetroArch's system/BIOS folder (the frontend's 'system' directory). The libretro Handy documentation lists the required filename and MD5 (lynxboot.img, md5 fcd403db69f54290b51035d82f835e7b). The system directory location depends on the frontend and platform; RetroArch's menu shows the configured System/BIOS directory in Settings → Directory → System/BIOS. The BIOS file is not provided by the core or RetroArch — obtain it legally where permitted and verify its hash if needed.
  4. 4) Prepare Lynx ROM images (.lnx): Handy loads Lynx images using the .lnx extension. Many Lynx images include a 64‑byte header (No-Intro / headered .lnx) which Handy expects; headerless dumps or other variants may need a correct header to run. If a ROM fails to boot, try a headered .lnx image or use Lynx header tools from the Lynx homebrew/dev community to inspect or add the header.
  5. 5) Load content in RetroArch: From RetroArch: Main Menu → Load Content → navigate to your .lnx file (or .zip containing it). If the core was installed, choose the Handy core when prompted. If you see a black screen or 'failed to load content', confirm the lynxboot.img file is in the frontend system directory, the file is named exactly, and that the ROM is a supported .lnx image.
  6. 6) Configure core options and controllers: With content running, open Quick Menu → Options to set Handy-specific options such as Display rotation. Use Quick Menu → Controls to remap gamepad input. Save core options after changing if you want them persistent for Handy.
  7. 7) Saves, states and troubleshooting: Handy supports save states through RetroArch; however, the core lists 'Saves' as unsupported (some cartridge save mechanisms may not be fully implemented), so rely on save states for progress and verify game behavior. If a game has graphical glitches or fails to run, check documentation and compatibility notes; RetroArch's core info and the libretro-handy issue tracker are the appropriate places to report bugs or search for known issues.

Software reminder: The Handy core and RetroArch do not include game ROMs or proprietary BIOS files. Only use boot images and ROMs that you legally own or that are freely distributed.
