Prompted by this alarming discovery, the father reported the incident to the Mooresville Police Department, which worked in conjunction with the Department of Homeland Security on the case.

Among various allegations, Des Barres is accused of felony solicitation of a child by computer and first-degree sexual exploitation of a minor.

The 13-year-old, whose identity is being protected by Channel 9, reportedly came into contact with Des Barres through an online video game. Reacting to the events, the teenager’s father said, “I was shocked,” and acknowledged the urgent need for verification measures on social media platforms.

Court documents have brought to light that Des Barres allegedly coaxed the minor into capturing and sharing lewd photographs and videos of himself in their chats.

Known in the late ’90s and early 2000s by his alias Nick Rox, Des Barres was a well-regarded video game journalist before these allegations surfaced.

Skyler Tuckler, an officer specializing in internet crimes against children at the Mooresville Police Department, shared insights with Faherty on the necessary steps parents should take to protect their children online.

The father believes his son’s online exchanges with Des Barres could have been ongoing for some time. He found additional packages sent to his son from Des Barres’ Reseda address.

He hopes his ordeal will serve as a cautionary tale, urging other parents to be vigilant with their children’s internet use. “If you have a feeling, go through their room, go through their belongings, go through their phone, go through their emails, their social media. You donā€™t know what youā€™re keeping them safe from,” the father expressed to Faherty.

Des Barres is currently held at the Iredell County jail with a set bond of $1 million.
