Lara Croft’s Iconic Look Was No Accident
When Tomb Raider launched in 1996, Lara Croft quickly became one of the most recognizable characters in gaming. But while a popular myth claims her famous proportions came from a “programming mistake,” the truth is a little different.
Lara’s design was carefully planned by Core Design artist Toby Gard. He originally envisioned her as a tough, adventurous woman inspired by comic book heroines like Tank Girl and pulp adventurers from old films. Her exaggerated features, including her bust size, were a deliberate design choice to help her stand out in the crowded action game market of the 1990s.
Gard later admitted that he exaggerated her look to get attention, but he also emphasized that Lara was meant to be more than just eye candy. She was designed to be strong, intelligent, and independent, a character who could go toe to toe with the likes of Indiana Jones. The “accidental bust slider” story was nothing more than a joke that got repeated so often it took on a life of its own.
Today, Lara Croft remains a gaming icon, but her later reboots shifted toward a more realistic design, reflecting how both the technology and audience expectations have evolved. What never changed, however, is her role as one of the most legendary adventurers in video game history.
