A player sitting in front of an early IBM PC compatible, booting up a game like King's Quest, would first notice the sharp, limited palette of CGA graphics and the beeps of the PC speaker. These constraints shaped every moment: backgrounds were rendered in cyan and magenta, and music was little more than a series of tones. Developers worked within these boundaries, crafting adventure games and simple action titles that relied on text and clever design rather than visual spectacle. The hardware dictated the pace and style, typing commands, waiting for screens to redraw, and listening to the mechanical whir of floppy drives as each scene loaded.
Inside the machine
The arrival of EGA and then VGA graphics, along with sound cards like the AdLib and Sound Blaster, changed what DOS gaming could deliver. Suddenly, a game like Wing Commander could fill the screen with detailed starfields and colorful ships, while digitized sound and music made the cockpit feel alive. SimCity’s cityscapes became more readable and expressive, and mouse support made managing a growing metropolis far more practical. These upgrades weren’t automatic; players often had to configure IRQs and DMA channels, and compatibility was never guaranteed. Still, the payoff was immediate: richer visuals, better sound, and more complex controls.
Games and upgrades
By the time CD-ROM drives and Pentium processors became common, DOS games had grown in ambition and size. Full-motion video, sprawling RPGs, and large-scale shooters like Doom or Myst became possible, with installation sizes that dwarfed earlier floppy-based releases. The hardware arms race meant each new upgrade brought a new set of possibilities, but also new hurdles, drivers, memory managers, and the ever-present challenge of making a game run smoothly on a unique combination of parts. The result was a library shaped as much by technical ingenuity as by creative ambition.
