Wii U
The Wii U is Nintendo's home console with a touchscreen GamePad controller. Many games divide information or play between the TV and GamePad screen.

A living room with four friends gathered around Nintendo Land’s Mario Chase is a snapshot of what Wii U tried to deliver. One player clutches the GamePad, eyes darting between its touchscreen map and the TV, while the others coordinate from the couch, chasing the hidden Mario. This split attention, with asymmetric information, was only possible because the Wii U put a second screen in the player’s hands. The GamePad’s resistive touchscreen and built-in motion sensors let Nintendo experiment with new multiplayer dynamics, but it also meant developers had to design for two screens at once, which few third parties attempted.
A tablet beside the television
At launch in late 2012, the Wii U arrived in two models: the white Basic set with 8 GB of storage and the black Deluxe with 32 GB. The hardware ran on a custom IBM PowerPC processor and an AMD Radeon GPU, supporting HD visuals up to 1080p. Nintendo’s own titles made the most of the setup. In Splatoon, the GamePad’s screen became a live map, letting players instantly track territory and jump to teammates with a tap. New Super Mario Bros. U let a fifth player use the touchscreen to drop platforms, changing the pace of classic side-scrolling chaos. But the system’s 1 GB memory cap for games and modest CPU speed made it tough for developers to bring over large, open-world experiences that were becoming standard elsewhere.
Nintendo carries the library
The Wii U’s library grew slowly, with Nintendo carrying much of the weight. Many third-party publishers hesitated, citing the extra work of supporting the GamePad and the system’s smaller audience. Digital purchases were tied to the hardware, not an account, making upgrades and repairs a headache. Still, the Wii U’s experiments with off-TV play and local multiplayer shaped how Nintendo approached the Switch, where portability and flexible play became central. The Wii U’s living room moments were shaped as much by its hardware quirks as by the games that found ways to use them.
