Upcoming Crazy Taxi Reboot Will Be a Triple-A Title, Sega Says

Sega has revealed that the upcoming reboot of the classic arcade racing game Crazy Taxi will be a big-budget, triple-A release.

This news came from Takaya Segawa, president of Sega’s Sapporo Studio, in an interview with the Japan Times. Sapporo Studio is one of the developers working on the new Crazy Taxi game.

When discussing the studio’s current projects, Segawa said “We are also participating in the development of triple-A titles, including Crazy Taxi.”

Sega first announced it was working on a new Crazy Taxi at The Game Awards in December 2022. However, the company did not provide details on the scope or budget for the reboot.

The original Crazy Taxi first launched in arcades in 1999, then came to Dreamcast in 2000 where it became one of the console’s bestselling games. The last main entry in the series was Crazy Taxi 3: High Roller on Xbox in 2002.

Fans have long hoped the frantic, cabbie racing series would return. Now it seems Sega is committed to making the reboot a major release on par with its other triple-A franchises.

Segawa also mentioned Sapporo Studio is assisting with games like Phantasy Star Online 2 and Hatsune Miku: Colorful Stage. But the studio is hoping to take the lead on its own original titles in the future.

The Crazy Taxi announcement continues Sega’s renewed focus on its classic properties. At The Game Awards, the company also revealed new games in the Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Jet Set Radio, and Shinobi series are underway.

No release date or platforms have been announced yet for the new Crazy Taxi. But with it now confirmed as a triple-A project, fans can look forward to a fully-featured reboot of the beloved arcade racer.
