Gameplay
The first few moves in Tommy’s Nite Lites! feel wonderfully manageable. There are only 36 cells, and clicking one affects a neat diagonal cluster: the selected square plus every diagonally adjacent square. You can understand the rule in seconds. Solving the board cleanly is another matter. A click that clears a promising patch can quietly re-shade squares you had already handled, and the puzzle starts demanding that you think two or three moves ahead.
Its strongest trick is how quickly it turns trial and error into planning. At first, you will likely poke at the grid, watch the pattern change, and undo your own progress through sheer optimism. Then the relationships between squares begin to click. Corners, edges, and crowded diagonal groups each ask for different consideration, and a board that looked arbitrary begins to feel like a problem you can actually read.
The 10,000-point starting score is a smart bit of pressure. Since every move costs a point, merely finishing is not the whole job; you are encouraged to revisit a solution and cut out wasted clicks. That is where the game earns its place as more than a quick diversion. Saving and restarting also suit that score-chasing rhythm, letting you preserve progress or take another run at a tighter answer.
Frustration sets in when you know the board is solvable but cannot see which earlier move poisoned the route. There is no room here to hide behind busy action or luck: it is you, the grid, and the consequences of every selection. If that sounds stern, it is also the reason a successful clear feels deserved. The shareware release contains only difficulty levels 1 and 2, while the full game has nine, so this version works chiefly as a focused test of whether its central puzzle grabs you.

Graphics
The game is built around a fixed, top-down 6-by-6 board of shaded and unshaded squares. That stripped-down view puts the changing diagonal patterns front and center, making it easy to track exactly what each selection has altered.

Story
There is no character journey or plotted scenario to carry you through Tommy’s Nite Lites! Its story is the small drama created by the board: a messy field of shaded squares, a promising sequence of clicks, and the moment your last move clears the remaining holdouts.
That absence of narrative is appropriate for such a concentrated puzzle. Nothing interrupts the task or tries to dress it up. You bring the momentum yourself, especially when a near-solution makes you restart with a better plan.
Because each board is about reducing a visible problem to nothing, the game creates its own little arc every time you play. Confusion gives way to pattern recognition, and pattern recognition either produces a satisfying finish or sends you back to the first move.
Overall Experience
Tommy’s Nite Lites! is a lean, old-school logic puzzle with a rule set simple enough to explain in one sentence and enough bite to support repeated attempts. Its 6-by-6 scope keeps sessions short, but the diagonal toggling rule makes careless clicking expensive. You do not need a long campaign to get a real puzzle out of it.
The payoff is strongest if you enjoy staring at a board until its structure suddenly becomes obvious. The point deduction adds a welcome reason to improve rather than settle, and the ability to save or restart respects both deliberate solving and compulsive do-overs.
Give it a chance if compact score-driven grid puzzles sound relaxing rather than restrictive. The shareware portion is necessarily brief, but it puts the core idea forward without distraction. For the right mood, that is enough: a clean little brainteaser that asks for patience, rewards efficiency, and makes every final cleared square feel earned.
