Beetle PCE FAST

Beetle PCE FAST is the libretro core (Beetle/Mednafen pce_fast) for NEC PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 systems, including CD support. It is a libretro-port/fork of Mednafen's pce_fast module intended for use as a RetroArch/libretro core.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why use Beetle PCE FAST?

Beetle PCE FAST offers a fast, widely distributed libretro core for PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 and CD content. It is specifically the libretro port of Mednafen's pce_fast module (the performance-oriented variant) and is commonly used in RetroArch and other libretro frontends where speed and broad platform availability are priorities.

BEST FOR

Best for

Users who want a libretro-compatible, relatively fast PC Engine / TurboGrafx-16 core with CD playback support and easy installation through RetroArch/core updater.

The people behind Beetle PCE FAST

History and lineage

Beetle PCE FAST is a libretro port/fork of Mednafen's pce_fast module. The upstream Mednafen project provides multiple PCE modules (pce, pce_fast); the pce_fast module is designed for higher performance at the cost of some emulation detail. The libretro project (and libretro-super distribution) maintains a mednafen_pce_fast_libretro core (display name: "NEC – PC Engine / CD (Beetle PCE FAST)"). The libretro port removes the SuperGrafx module from pce_fast and exposes core options and BIOS selection appropriate for libretro frontends. The core is distributed through libretro's core ecosystem (core-updater / libretro-super builds) and has been adopted by many RetroArch-based distributions.

What Beetle PCE FAST supports

  • PC Engine (HuCard)
  • TurboGrafx-16 (HuCard)
  • PC Engine CD / TurboGrafx-CD (CD-ROM playback)
  • Common image formats: .pce, .bin/.cue, .iso, .chd (CD image support via core)

Beetle PCE FAST setup guide

Setup note: This setup guide covers obtaining the core, required BIOS files, placing game images, and configuring RetroArch/libretro frontends for Beetle PCE FAST. Follow your frontend’s normal core-install procedure (RetroArch core updater recommended). Do not acquire BIOS or commercial game images from unauthorized sources.

  1. 1) Install the core: Open RetroArch (or another libretro frontend) and use its Core Updater to download/install "NEC – PC Engine / CD (Beetle PCE FAST)" (core name mednafen_pce_fast_libretro). Alternatively, obtain libretro-super build artifacts that include mednafen_pce_fast_libretro. Do not use unofficial builds from unknown sources.
  2. 2) Provide required BIOS files (CD support): Place the PC Engine CD BIOS files in your frontend's system/BIOS directory. Mednafen/libretro expects syscard*.pce files for CD playback (examples: syscard1.pce, syscard2.pce, syscard3.pce). The libretro core exposes a core option to select which syscard to use. The Mednafen pce_fast documentation references a pce_fast.cdbios setting pointing to syscard3.pce by default; ensure the filename and path match your frontend's BIOS directory. The core will not include these BIOS files; you must supply them yourself.
  3. 3) Put game images where your frontend expects them: Supported image types include HuCard/ROM files (commonly .pce) and CD images (.cue/.bin, .iso) or compression/container formats such as CHD. For CHD images, place them alongside the .cue or use your frontend’s library paths. Use correct cuesheets for multi-track CD-ROMs.
  4. 4) Configure core options: After loading the core (or a game), open the core options menu in your frontend and set the CD BIOS selection (syscard1/2/3), HuC6280 CPU/options if available, and any performance-related toggles. The libretro documentation for Beetle PCE FAST lists options exposed by the core; adjust them only if you understand their effect (some change compatibility or audio behavior).
  5. 5) Loading CD games: Load the .cue file (or the .iso/.chd) with the core active. If you see a black screen or CD doesn't boot, confirm the correct syscard .pce file is present and selected in core options and that the cue file paths inside the .cue are correct relative to the image file.
  6. 6) Troubleshooting performance and compatibility: Beetle PCE FAST is the performance-oriented module; if you encounter accuracy problems with certain titles, try the alternative Beetle PCE/core based on Mednafen pce (the non-fast module) if available in your frontend. For speed issues, enable platform-specific performance options (e.g., hardware renderer, frame throttle) in your frontend, and ensure your device meets recommended performance for the core.
  7. 7) Save states and memory cards: Use your frontend's standard save state and savefile mechanisms. CD game saves typically rely on emulated HuCard/backup RAM; verify the core's save path in your frontend settings if persistent saves do not appear.

Software reminder: This core does not include commercial games, BIOS files, or copyrighted firmware. Acquire BIOS and game media only from sources you own or are legally permitted to use.
