A player’s first encounter with Bonk’s Adventure on the TurboGrafx-16 often started with a bright, cartoonish world and a headbutt attack that felt different from Mario’s jumps or Sonic’s spins. The game’s chunky sprites and smooth scrolling showcased what the hardware could do, especially compared to the NES. This was possible because Hudson’s custom video chip could display hundreds of colors at once, and the HuCard format loaded games quickly, even if its 2.5 megabit limit capped the size of early titles. The single controller port meant multiplayer required a multitap, but Bomberman ’93 made it worthwhile, letting up to five friends crowd around the TV for frantic matches, a rare feature at the time.
The hardware in practice
The PC Engine’s compact design in Japan was a deliberate break from the bulky consoles of the era. Measuring just 14 centimeters square, it fit easily on a crowded shelf. In North America, the TurboGrafx-16 arrived in a larger, angular shell and with a new name, but the core hardware stayed the same. NEC’s marketing in the US struggled against Sega’s Genesis blitz and Nintendo’s entrenched NES, and many of the best Japanese games never crossed the ocean. The HuCard’s region lockout, achieved by reversing eight pins, quietly split the library between continents, leaving importers to hunt for adapters or modified systems.
Games and ownership
The CD-ROM² add-on, released in Japan in late 1988, changed what was possible on a home console. Suddenly, games like Ys Book I & II could feature orchestrated soundtracks, voice acting, and animated cutscenes, elements that cartridges couldn’t fit. The North American TurboGrafx-CD was expensive and arrived with little software, but in Japan, the CD format quickly expanded the library. Later upgrades like the Super CD-ROM² and Arcade Card added more RAM, supporting even more ambitious games. The PC Engine’s hardware family grew to include portables, compact refreshes, and the SuperGrafx, but the core experience always came back to fast-loading HuCards and a focus on arcade-style action. The system’s legacy is clearest in its shooters and platformers, where technical choices shaped both what players saw and how quickly they could jump back in after a game over.
