WHY IT MATTERS

Why BigPEmu matters

BigPEmu is the first widely distributed emulator to achieve compatibility across the Atari Jaguar retail library, including Jaguar CD support and several advanced features (Jaguar Link, Jaguar VR support, scripting modules). It is notable for accuracy and active developer-driven updates.

BEST FOR

Best use case

Playing and preserving the Atari Jaguar and Jaguar CD retail library on modern x86_64 Windows and Linux systems, or on ARM64 Linux where builds are provided. Also useful for researchers wanting detailed emulation features such as CD emulation, linked multiplayer (JagLink), VR output and configurable script modules.

The people behind BigPEmu

History and status

BigPEmu was published by developer Rich Whitehouse with public releases and user documentation on his site. Public release history and community changelogs show incrementing v1.xx releases and feature additions such as Jaguar CD fixes, JagLink, stereoscopic/VR support, and platform ports. The project is actively maintained as of the latest public downloads and Flatpak packaging entries; some optional script modules and advanced features are distributed separately (Patreon/paid tiers were referenced by the developer for certain modules).

What BigPEmu supports

  • Windows x64 (official binary)
  • Windows ARM64 (official binary)
  • Linux (Flatpak available via Flathub; community packaging)
  • Jaguar CD emulation (image support and bank switching)
  • JagLink (networked linked play) and VR/stereoscopic features where supported

Download and availability

OFFICIAL DOWNLOADS

Get BigPEmu

Official public binaries and platform-specific builds are provided from the developer's site and via Flathub for Linux. The official download page lists Windows x64 and Windows ARM64 builds; a Flatpak exists for Linux. Do not expect commercial game ROMs, CD images, BIOS files, or firmware to be included — you must provide those legally yourself.

BigPEmu setup guide

Setup note: This setup guide covers obtaining BigPEmu official builds, required user files, and practical configuration tips for Windows and Linux. It focuses on the official binaries and documented configuration locations; adapt paths if you install the Flatpak or use custom directories.

  1. 1) Get the official build: Download the official binaries from the developer's website downloads page or install the Flatpak from Flathub for Linux. For Windows use the provided ZIP for x64 or the ARM64 ZIP if you have an ARM Windows device. For Linux prefer the Flathub package (com.richwhitehouse.BigPEmu) to get sandboxed, distribution-friendly installs.
  2. 2) Extract and place files: On Windows: extract the ZIP to a folder you control (e.g., C:\Emulators\BigPEmu). On Linux Flatpak installs place application data under your Home Applications/ or XDG paths; manual binary installs should be extracted to a user directory and given execute permission. Keep the BigPEmu executable and the 'UserData' or configuration folder together if you want portable settings.
  3. 3) Prepare game images: BigPEmu accepts cartridge ROM images and Jaguar CD disc images. Create legal images from your own media. The emulator can produce a BigPImage container (BigPImage/BigPImage files) — consult the user manual for the exact creation steps. Files should be placed where you choose; you can also place per-game BigPEmu config files beside images to have automatic settings loaded.
  4. 4) Configure the emulator (first run): Run the BigPEmu executable to create the default configuration. Open the user manual or in-emulator help to learn about energy-saving mode, audio/video settings, and scripting modules. Configure input (gamepad/keyboard) and video output resolution. If using Jaguar CD software, enable the Jaguar CD option and point the emulator at the CD image.
  5. 5) Jaguar CD specifics: Jaguar CD titles sometimes require bank-switching or specific image formats. BigPEmu includes options to force Jaguar GD (bank switching) and other CD compatibility toggles — use the documentation's Jaguar CD section if a game does not boot. Do not expect any BIOS/firmware to be bundled; if a particular title requires a firmware file, you must source it legally and place it where BigPEmu expects it as documented.
  6. 6) Advanced features: JagLink, VR, scripts: JagLink (linked play) and VR/stereoscopic rendering are supported in recent BigPEmu releases. These features may require additional configuration, scripts, or external drivers (VR runtime). Some script modules that enable features such as stereo sound or gameplay adjustments have been distributed separately by the developer; consult the project's documentation or Patreon notes for obtaining and installing script modules, then place them in the emulator's scripting/module directory per the manual.
  7. 7) Saving, per-game settings, and state files: BigPEmu supports save states and per-game .bigpcfg configuration files. To have automatic per-game settings, place a .bigpcfg file beside the corresponding image with the expected filename and the emulator will load it. Back up save-state and configuration directories before upgrading versions in case format changes occur.
  8. 8) Running on Linux distributions: Preferred route: install the Flatpak from Flathub (application ID com.richwhitehouse.BigPEmu) to manage sandboxing and dependencies. If using the Windows binary under Wine/Proton, configure a Wine prefix, place BigPEmu in that prefix, and ensure the Wine environment has required permissions for audio/video and joystick devices. Community guides mention specific config locations for XDG and SteamOS/EmuDeck integrations — follow those platform-specific notes.

Software reminder: BigPEmu binaries and documentation are provided by the author; you must supply any commercial game ROMs, Jaguar CD images, BIOS or firmware files yourself and only use them where you hold legal rights to do so.
