LaiNES

NES EMULATOR

LaiNES

LaiNES is an open-source, compact cycle-accurate NES (Nintendo Entertainment System) emulator focused on a small codebase, cycle timing accuracy, and broad mapper support. It builds on SDL2 and is intended for Unix-like systems (Linux, macOS).

WHY IT MATTERS

Why consider LaiNES?

LaiNES is attractive when you want a small, readable codebase that still aims for cycle-accurate behaviour and supports a wide set of common NES mappers including some expansion-audio mappers. It includes a minimal GUI, savestate support, fast-forward, and configurable controls without needing heavyweight dependencies.

BEST FOR

Best for

Users who want a compact, source-oriented NES emulator to study or compile on Unix-like systems (Linux, macOS). Also useful if you need cycle-accurate timing for research or compatibility testing and prefer building from source.

History & status

LaiNES is maintained on GitHub (AndreaOrru/LaiNES). The repository describes the project as a compact, cycle-accurate NES emulator and lists contributors who added mapper support, expansion audio (VRC6), savestates, and accuracy improvements. The project is actively hosted on GitHub and has releases available; activity and issues are visible on the repository. I could not verify a single-author start year from the repository page alone, so the project start date is left as 'History documented'.

What LaiNES supports

  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom (.nes iNES-format ROMs)
  • Common mappers: NROM (000), MMC1 (001), UxROM (002), CNROM (003), MMC3/MMC6 (004), MMC5 (005), AxROM (007), MMC2 (009), MMC4 (010), Color Dreams (011), VRC6 (024) with expansion audio, BNROM/NINA-001 (034), GxROM (066)
  • Savestates (per-ROM)
  • Multiple controllers / joystick support via SDL2
  • Fast-forward (8x) and basic on-screen menu

LaiNES setup guide

Setup note: Practical setup: LaiNES is built from source. The repository README lists dependencies and exact build commands. Below are detailed steps to get a working build and run ROMs. LaiNES does not include games, system firmware, or BIOS files.

  1. 1) Get the source: Clone the official repository (recursive clone to fetch submodules): git clone –recursive https://github.com/AndreaOrru/LaiNES && cd LaiNES. Use the releases page if you prefer a tagged release instead of master.
  2. 2) Install build dependencies: LaiNES requires: SCons, a C++14-compatible compiler (clang++ or g++ with C++14 support), and SDL2 plus SDL2_image and SDL2_ttf. On Debian/Ubuntu: sudo apt-get install clang scons libsdl2-dev libsdl2-image-dev libsdl2-ttf-dev. On Arch: sudo pacman -S clang scons sdl2 sdl2_image sdl2_ttf. On macOS with Homebrew: brew install scons sdl2 sdl2_image sdl2_ttf.
  3. 3) Build: From the repository root run: scons -j4. This uses the provided SConstruct to compile the laines executable. Remove -j4 or change the job count if you need to limit parallel build jobs.
  4. 4) Run the emulator: Start LaiNES with ./laines from the build directory. The emulator provides a simple GUI file browser to open .nes ROM files. Press ESC to toggle between emulation and the menu. Tab (hold) enables fast-forward mode (8x).
  5. 5) Controls, savestates, and configuration: Default keyboard/joystick controls are configurable in the GUI. LaiNES supports savestates (Save State / Load State in the menu) that preserve CPU, PPU, APU, mapper and expansion audio state; savestates are stored per-ROM by the emulator. Size, window, and controller settings can be changed via the options menu and saved between runs.
  6. 6) Audio troubleshooting (Linux): If you experience audio problems on Linux, the README recommends exporting the SDL audio driver before running: export SDL_AUDIODRIVER=ALSA (adjust based on your system's available backends).
  7. 7) Compatibility notes: LaiNES implements many common mappers (see supports). It documents limitations and refers to mapper compatibility lists (for example tuxnes mapper lists) for per-ROM mapper support. Some less common or complex mappers may be unsupported; consult the repository for the current mapper coverage.
  8. 8) Packaging and distribution: The official distribution method is source releases on GitHub. Third-party mirrors (e.g., SourceForge) may host archives, but prefer the GitHub releases page for official tags and source. The project uses a BSD-2-Clause license—check the LICENSE file in the repo for details.

Software reminder: LaiNES does not include commercial games, cartridge ROMs, proprietary firmware, or BIOS files. You must provide your own legally-obtained .nes ROMs. Follow local law and copyrights when obtaining ROM images.
