WHY IT MATTERS

Why Nestur exists

Nestur is primarily an educational project: the author implements NES subsystems following the NESDev documentation and aims for a usable emulator without unsafe Rust. It is intended for learning and experimentation rather than as a full-featured accuracy-first project.

BEST FOR

What Nestur does well

Clean Rust implementation (no use of unsafe), NTSC timing, clear PPU-related comments that reference NESDev, and support for early/common mappers (0–4) which the README says cover roughly 85% of NES games. It is straightforward to build from source on Linux, macOS, and Windows.

Repository and project status

Nestur is hosted on GitHub as an open-source Rust NES emulator. The README describes it as an educational but usable emulator, lists features and build instructions, and documents controls, save-state behaviour, and supported mappers. The repository shows active source history but is presented as a personal/educational codebase rather than a long-term commercial project. The author asks for issues to be submitted if bugs are found.

What nestur supports

  • Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) – iNES .nes files
  • Common mappers: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4 (per README)
  • Battery-backed save (creates .sav alongside ROM when applicable)
  • Platforms: Linux, macOS, Windows (build instructions provided)

nestur setup guide

Setup note: This setup guide is based on the project's README and build instructions. It focuses on building from source and running NES ROMs (iNES/.nes files). Do not expect any bundled commercial games, firmware, or BIOS files — provide your own legally obtained ROMs.

  1. 1) Clone the repository: Get the official source from the project's GitHub: git clone https://github.com/spieglt/nestur.git and change into the project directory.
  2. 2) Install prerequisites: Install Rust and Cargo from rust-lang.org. Install a system C compiler (build-essential on Debian/Ubuntu, Xcode on macOS, or Visual Studio Build Tools on Windows). Install CMake if required by any native dependencies.
  3. 3) SDL2 dependency: Nestur lists SDL2 in its topics. Ensure SDL2 (development headers/libraries) is installed for your platform so Cargo can link SDL2 bindings when building.
  4. 4) Build in release mode: From the repository root run: cargo build –release. The README explicitly recommends building and running the release binary for acceptable performance. The produced executable will be in target/release/ (target/release/nestur or nestur.exe on Windows).
  5. 5) Run the emulator and load a ROM: Run the executable by double-clicking or from a terminal. You can drag a .nes (iNES) ROM onto the program window or pass the path as the first command-line argument. The emulator creates a .sav file alongside the ROM if the cartridge uses battery-backed RAM.
  6. 6) Controls and save states: Default keyboard mapping: A=D, B=F, Start=Enter, Select=Right-Shift, directional arrows for D-pad. F2 resets, F5 saves a state, F9 loads the most recent save state. Save-state files are named romname-#.dat; you can drag a .dat file onto the window to load a specific state.
  7. 7) Troubleshooting: If the build fails, ensure Rust toolchain and system C toolchain are installed and SDL2 dev libraries are available. If performance is poor, confirm you built with –release. Report bugs to the repository issues page if you encounter emulator glitches; the README invites issue reports.

Software reminder: Nestur requires a legally obtained iNES (.nes) ROM file. The project does not include copyrighted games, BIOS, or firmware.
