GAME BOY ADVANCE EMULATOR
SkyEmu
SkyEmu is an open-source emulator that runs Game Boy Advance, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, and (beta) Nintendo DS software. It provides cross-platform native builds and a WebAssembly progressive web app, with a focus on a balance of accuracy and performance.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why pick SkyEmu?
SkyEmu targets high-accuracy GBA emulation while remaining fast and cross-platform. It includes advanced features such as per-pixel PPU rendering, rewind/fast-forward, persistent save states, controller/rumble support, and a web build that runs locally in the browser.
BEST FOR
Best for
Users who want a modern, actively developed GBA-focused emulator that runs on desktop, mobile and in the browser; developers who want an open-source, low-level implementation to study or extend.

History & status
SkyEmu is developed on GitHub (skylersaleh/SkyEmu) and shows active development, many commits, and recent releases. The project documents a multi-year development history and lists features and compatibility claims in the README, including extensive GBA test compliance and per-pixel PPU support. The DS core is explicitly marked as beta quality. Official stable builds are published on the project's GitHub releases page and a WebAssembly progressive web app is hosted at web.skyemu.app. The repository contains build scripts and native build instructions (CMake).
What SkyEmu supports

Setup note: Practical setup notes for using SkyEmu (native and web). Follow the official releases and README for the most recent platform-specific builds and build instructions.
- 1) Get the official build: Go to the project's Releases on GitHub and download the build for your platform. Stable builds are published on GitHub releases; development/nightly builds are available from the repository's CI artifacts and the web app.
- 2) Use the Web (PWA) build for quick testing: Open the web app (web.skyemu.app) in a modern browser. You can drag ROM files onto the page or use the ROM picker. On mobile, add the site to your home screen to avoid browser data loss and to get a full-screen app-like experience.
- 3) Native usage — placing ROMs, saves and BIOS: Native builds accept a ROM path as the first command-line argument (./SkyEmu path/to/rom.gba). For native builds, place save files and optional BIOS files in the same directory as the ROM. The GBA BIOS file (if used) must be named gba_bios.bin to be recognized. Save files should be named exactly like the ROM but with a .sav extension (e.g., MyRomFile.gba → MyRomFile.sav).
- 4) Optional: provide official BIOS/firmware: SkyEmu bundles open-source replacement BIOS/stubs, so platform BIOS files are not strictly required. The project strongly recommends dumping official BIOS/firmware for best compatibility and accuracy; place official files alongside ROMs using the filenames described in the README.
- 5) Build from source (native experimental builds): Requirements: CMake and a C/C++ toolchain. Typical commands documented in the repository: mkdir build; cd build; cmake ..; cmake –build . The resulting binaries appear under build/bin. The repository includes CMakeLists and CI workflows for cross-platform builds.
- 6) Configure controls, saves and features: SkyEmu supports configurable keyboard/controller mappings, rumble, 4 persistent save-state slots with screenshot previews, rewind/fast-forward, Action Replay cheats, upscaling shaders, and localization. Use the in-emulator settings to map controllers and tune shaders or enable BIOS loading for features like GB colorization.
Software reminder: SkyEmu does not include commercial game ROMs or official BIOS/firmware. Dumping and using vendor BIOS/firmware may be required for highest accuracy and is subject to the original firmware's license and local law.
