Played some Alien vs Predator (Jaguar) recently.. I can see why it’s been called the best Jaguar game ever, but that’s not saying much lol. While innovative for the time (solid FPS controls, realistic sprites, creepy atmosphere and multiple character selection) it looks very dated now, runs at an anemic 10-15fps and won’t impress anyone today.
As a 1994 console FPS it was one of the best, but compared to PC FPS games of the era like Rise of the Triad or Heretic it’s not going to stand up well to those.

Have you ever heard of The Legend of Zelda: BS Edition? If not, you’re not …
The main problem of this game is that it is on jaguar .
Alien vs Predator on the PC was an awesome game.
i like the Alien vs Predator beat em up for arcade
Have to admit I have still never played this despite wanting to for many years. Never owned a jaguar and never knew anyone personally that had one either. Maybe one day I will get round to it
I have the big box PC game and it’s expansion like new, looks cool in the box.
This is pretty good fun as well
One of my favorite games. I also got it on PS1 but it’s not the same
Played this at the local store and loved it so much that i wanted to buy the console but didn’t have the funds for it and my father said no as well.
But wasn’t big of an deal for me as i practically lived at my local games store, so got to play this alot.
1994 was 29 yrs ago
You had to be there at the time to appreciate the significance of this release .
I’ll say, its definitely no Iron Angel of the Apocalypse
Looks like Crusaders of the Dark Savant
Too bad never release in PS1, I am looking forward for it
Has anyone ever attempted to make a doom mod/Total Conversion remake of this game?
The game is awesome, but the jag can barely run it. The map is also pretty confusing. This game would be a great candidate for a modern facelift.
I remember it was bad even when I played it as a fresh release. Not comparable to pc AvP or Alien trilogy on psx. But thanks for the post. I just installed epsxe on my phone and I’m going to play Alien Trilogy tonight. 🙂
I liked it but wasnt my favorite Jaguar game. I loved Doom, Wolfenstein, Raiden, Dino Dudes. Lots of good games unless its all nostalgia for me.
Think I could get this running on steam deck?
I think this game is awesome. I like how it is randomised every time you play and has 3 completely different campaigns. I think you have to put it into context to fully appreciate this title – this came out in 1994 about 2 weeks after Doom 2 on PC. Console fps games were barely off the ground and even PC fps games, despite obviously having much better performance, were still quite basic in terms of gameplay. Its easy to criticize this game today, but at the time it was a revelation for console fps games
I was 14 and saved up money to buy a Jaguar and aliens v predator, and kasumi ninja ..needless to say those were the only 2 games I bought lol
It was poor when it was relased
Try alien Trilogy
It cost like 800 didn’t it
The thing is with AvP is that there was nothing remotely close to this game at the time in the same price range on console. Context is everything. It was impressive looking for it’s time and did somewhat show off what the system could do if you knew how to program on the odd setup. Yes there were better lookers out there IF you had the budget for it. Overall I’d still say it’s a good game, though it realize on atmos more than anything else.
I’ll never understand people collecting for the jaguar and similar systems with bad games. Systems need at least 10 games that are worth playing for it to be worth owning.
Justin Garret Ingle i rarely play, i would rather play my pc. I collect because it makes me happy and yes i have a jag collection. I played avp when it came out as i worked in a game store at the time. At the time i thought it was terrible and would rather play zero tolerance on the megadrive.
When I was young I see it in the gaming magizines and wish I had it and a jaguar
Is it possible to emulate this and overclock to get better performance? Or is Jag emulation not great?
As the OP said….for its time, AvP was a pretty good looker and decent playing game.
PC gamers even of the time of course, would scoff at it, but for console gaming, Atari tried to do something different and meaty with the FPS genre and they should be commended for it.
That said, yea, the game has NOT aged well, and after playing it using the different characters, I’ve come to the conclusion that the game really DOESN’T have the variety that it appears.
IMO, the ONLY way to really enjoy the game is as the Marine, due to the variance in weapons and a true feeling of terror.
Playing as the Alien and Predator, while fun at first, leads to repetitiveness, as those characters attacks and abilities aren’t as varied.
In short, I found the game got boring sooner than later with those, but still found some fun to be had as the Marine.
Seems to me that this game could have used some more time in development (yea, yea, probably tons of reasons why it needed to get shipped when it did) in order to flesh out the Alien and Predator characters, improve things like framerates and overall presentation.
Or, had the Jaguar survived long enough, a sequel on a larger cart, or on the Jag CD to expand upon the nice ideas in there.
I had that game. It was pretty good for the time but then ps1 blew everything else away
Do the math. That’s 64 megabit pow.er -__
This is like saying some NES arcade ports were good, but not as good as the actual arcade. Completely pointless.
You’re saying that a game that came out in 1994 feels outdated today? Man, who would’ve thought?
Few weeks ago a very good new Jaguar emulator came out who plays the games as good as an original console.. try it out.. i like it and enjoy playing with it. BigPEmu is the name..
Wtf is a jaguar ?
