The first time players ran Mario in three dimensions, the Nintendo 64’s analog stick became the star. Super Mario 64 opened on a grassy castle lawn, and suddenly, movement wasn’t just about left and right. The stick let players tiptoe, sprint, or spin with a twist of the thumb, making Mario’s world feel more physical and responsive than anything on a D-pad. Nintendo’s decision to keep cartridges meant Mario’s world loaded instantly, with no disc whirring or waiting, so experimentation felt natural and uninterrupted.
The hardware in practice
Cartridges, though, came with real trade-offs. Their limited storage forced developers to compress music and cut back on full-motion video. GoldenEye 007, for example, used brief voice clips and simple menus, but the four controller ports on the front of the console turned every living room into a multiplayer arena. Friends huddled around the TV, each with their own controller, ducking behind blocky walls and peeking at each other’s screens. The instant load times kept matches moving, but the cartridge’s small size meant some features, like elaborate cutscenes or orchestral soundtracks, were pared down or left out entirely.
Games and ownership
While other consoles embraced CDs and attracted more third-party studios, the Nintendo 64’s hardware choices shaped its library. Some developers struggled to fit their games onto the small cartridges, and a few skipped the system altogether. Still, the analog stick and four controller ports made certain play styles possible, and the hardware’s quirks left a distinct mark on every game that did make it to the system.
