The first thing a new WonderSwan owner noticed was the odd button layout: two sets of face buttons mirrored on either side of the screen. This wasn’t just a quirk. Games like Gunpey, a puzzle title from the system’s launch, asked players to hold the console vertically, using the extra buttons for comfortable control. Other games, such as Final Lap, stuck with the familiar horizontal grip. The dual-orientation design let developers experiment with play styles that felt awkward on other handhelds, though it sometimes meant players had to adjust their grip mid-session.
The hardware in practice
Bandai’s hardware choices reflected a focus on practicality. The monochrome LCD kept costs down and battery life up, letting players run for up to 40 hours on a single AA. This was a clear advantage over the Game Boy Color, which needed two batteries and offered less playtime. The trade-off was a screen that struggled in low light and couldn’t match the vibrancy of color rivals. When the WonderSwan Color arrived, it kept the same form factor and backward compatibility, but added a brighter palette for games like Digimon Adventure and the Japanese version of Final Fantasy.
Games and ownership
Most of the WonderSwan’s library stayed in Japan, shaped by Bandai’s local partnerships and licensing deals. Players found a mix of puzzle, RPG, and anime tie-in games, many of which never left the country. The hardware’s strengths, long battery life, flexible controls, and low price, made it a practical choice, but the limited international support meant that many players outside Japan only saw the system in import shops or magazine features.
