In case you missed it: Nintendo 64’s spies, tanks, choppers, and collectathons
This Nintendo 64 batch ranges from objective-led shooters and toybox warfare to two very different bear-and-bird adventures.
007: The World Is Not Enough
Bond’s oil-crisis mission sends Bond through 14 missions with briefings, gadgets, and objectives that expand across Agent, Special Agent, and 00 Agent difficulties. Its local multiplayer supports four players or bots, with Capture the Briefcase, King of the Hill, and the Golden Gun all on the table.
AeroGauge
a weapon-free hover racer keeps the focus on racing lines, braking, boosts, and track knowledge rather than combat pickups. Grand Prix, Time Trial ghost runs, and two-player split-screen make a good case for comparing lap times on those inverted sections.
Armorines: Project S.W.A.R.M.
the Armorines bug hunt pits two armored soldiers against insect swarms while a 120-hour deadline hangs over the campaign. Choose between the two characters, search levels for ammunition and routes, then try the split-screen co-op approach against the hive.
Army Men: Air Attack
the Army Men helicopter campaign moves the plastic conflict into third-person helicopter combat across 16 missions. Hueys, Chinooks, Super Stallions, and Apaches bring different roles to rescues, escorts, ground attacks, and dogfights, with multiplayer available for co-op or competition.
Army Men: Sarge’s Heroes 2
Sarge’s second campaign has Sarge facing Tan forces joined by Blue allies, with missions built around assaults, rescues, demolitions, and occasional vehicle runs. The oversized lawns, hoses, and playrooms remain the right setting for a discussion of which toy-world battlefield works best.
Asteroids Hyper 64
the 3D asteroid shooter turns asteroid clearing into a 3D arena fight with weapons, shields, alien ships, black holes, and end-of-level confrontations. Two players can share the screen cooperatively or compete for scores and power-ups when the debris starts piling up.
Banjo-Kazooie
Banjo and Kazooie’s rescue quest follows the bear-and-bird pair as they collect Jiggies, Notes, Mumbo Tokens, and Jinjos to reach Gruntilda’s lair and rescue Tooty. New moves open routes in earlier worlds, while Mumbo’s transformations shift the pair into alternate forms for particular challenges.
Banjo-Tooie
the larger Banjo sequel raises the scale with interconnected worlds, 40 new moves, playable Mumbo sections, and the ability for Banjo and Kazooie to split up. Its four-player diversions include shooting galleries, bumper-car bouts, and score contests; which of those would your group actually return to?
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
Terry McGinnis’s brawler puts the future Batman against Joker’s gang in a linear 3D action game of combos, counters, gadgets, and boss encounters. Alternate Batsuits add powers including camouflage, stronger strikes, and shockwaves, while Neo-Gotham supplies the neon backdrop.
BattleTanx
the ruined-city tank war gives Griffin Spade mission objectives across devastated American cities, from rescues and escorts to bunker attacks. Four-player split-screen supports free-for-alls and team flag matches, and the independently aimed turret makes strafing around rivals part of the contest.
For a Nintendo 64 night with friends, are you loading up four-player BattleTanx, Bond’s multiplayer modes, Army Men: Air Attack, or Banjo-Tooie’s mini-games first?
