Getting caught up: Windows dungeon crawls, battlefield commands, and Arrakis
This Windows selection roams from isometric fantasy quests to real-time battlefields, with plenty of old-school clicking, looting, and unit wrangling along the way.
Ancient Evil
In Alaric's crypt crawl, a magician’s 24-level crypt supplies traps, monsters, hidden rooms, and treasure. The choice between weapon use and spellcasting gives its dungeon delving a straightforward dark-fantasy shape.
Ancient Evil: Curse of the Snake Cult
the Snake Cult campaign sends a Royal Guard agent after the Ophilia Sect following the king’s murder. Its page describes mouse-led combat, books and beds to interact with, and a wizard-or-warrior approach to its temples and dungeons.
Close Combat: A Bridge Too Far
the Market Garden campaign puts Allied and German commanders on Dutch maps during Operation Market Garden. Infantry morale and hesitation under fire are central to the tension, so a bridge assault can unravel before armor arrives.
Dark Disciples
the Middengrave debt quest begins with a 100,000-gold debt left by Darrius and a dangerous trip toward the Merchant Guild. Its seven attributes let a character lean toward force, stealth, magic, or persuasion; which approach would you take at a locked gate?
Dawn of Magic
Modo's spell-combining adventure makes magic the focus, with four mages and spells that can be merged into new effects. Modo’s conflict over destroying or protecting the world sits alongside branching quests and element-heavy battles.
Diablo II
the Dark Wanderer's pursuit follows the Dark Wanderer across four acts of Sanctuary, from the Rogue Encampment to Hell. Amazon, Necromancer, Barbarian, Sorceress, and Paladin builds all feed into the familiar hunt for randomized equipment and runes.
Divine Divinity
the journey through Rivellon opens in Aleroth, where an amnesiac hero is drawn into corruption surrounding the Divine Order. Rivellon’s 2D maps, changing weather, cross-trainable skills, and thievable furniture give it a notably busy world.
Dune 2000
the struggle for Arrakis returns the Atreides, Ordos, and Harkonnen to spice harvesting, base building, and desert warfare. The Windows version’s live-action mission scenes and optional 8-bit colour mode make an interesting comparison point with the earlier strategy game.
Dungeon Siege
the defense of Ehb starts with a Krug attack on a farmstead and grows into a journey across Ehb. Recruited companions, formations, and skills raised through use turn its click-heavy combat into a running party-management exercise.
Dungeon Siege II
Valdis's war in Ehb brings Valdis and the Sword of Zaramoth into a later Ehb conflict. A six-hero party, tactical pausing, four combat disciplines, and item-fed pets give the sequel a busier command screen than its predecessor.
Which of these would you revisit first: Diablo II’s loot runs, Divine Divinity’s Rivellon wandering, Dungeon Siege II’s party tactics, or a hard-fought Dune 2000 House campaign?
