Gameplay

Use the pump to inflate Pookas and Fygars or lure them under a falling rock. Enemies can move through the dirt to reach you, so an escape route only buys you time. Fygars breathe fire, which makes an approach from above or below a safer bet.

The player catches a Fygar with the pump
Dig Dug gives you a pump to stop a monster before it reaches you.

The Japanese release

Namco’s original Japanese Famicom cartridge came out in 1985. The game uses an English title screen and straightforward controls for digging and pumping, so the stages are playable without Japanese.

A falling rock traps monsters in a tunnel
Dig Dug lets you use the rocks above your tunnels to clear enemies.
