Gameplay
The first useful lesson often comes at the braking marker. A fast car still needs a measured approach to the corner, and the PSP’s compact controls make a tidy line feel especially satisfying.
Single Race puts three computer opponents on the track, while Time Trial leaves the road open for a better lap. Drift Trial rewards a different sort of control, asking the driver to keep the car sliding without losing the run entirely.
Driving Challenges break techniques into short tests with medal targets. Credits earned through events feed the changing dealer roster, and ad hoc multiplayer lets nearby PSP owners race and exchange or share eligible cars.
Graphics
Recognizable circuits and carefully shaped cars carry much of the appeal on the small screen. A replay gives the player a chance to look at the vehicle from outside after a race spent watching the next braking point.
Story
The next event supplies the reason to climb into another car. Gran Turismo does not build a driver’s personal story around the garage.
There is no conventional championship career to march through. Progress comes from collecting vehicles, improving results, and choosing a new challenge when a familiar track starts feeling comfortable.
This PSP installment arrived in October 2009, alongside the launch of PSPgo. It was sold on UMD and through PlayStation Network, bringing the series to a different kind of PlayStation.
Overall Experience
A few spare minutes can disappear into one more license-style challenge or another attempt at a clean lap. The large car roster gives those small sessions a longer collecting habit to support.
The missing championship structure can leave the next goal up to the player. Someone who enjoys setting a time, buying a car, and trying the same corner again has plenty to do.
Local multiplayer suits the pleasure of showing a friend what has arrived in the garage. Gran Turismo’s handheld appeal rests on familiar cars and familiar tracks being close enough to carry along.
