Cro-Mag Rally

Cro-Mag Rally gets to the good stuff quickly: a caveman kart racer where you can throw bone bombs, bottle rockets, homing pigeons, and land mines at rival racers. Its 11 vehicles do more than change the joke; acceleration, top speed, suspension, and traction give the Bone Buggy, Geode Cruiser, and Logmobile distinct reasons to exist.

Nine tracks spread across Stone, Bronze, and Iron Age themes give the races a welcome sense of movement through time, while Gather offers a simple change of pace by sending you after scattered arrowheads. It is a compact, weapon-heavy racer with enough vehicle handling differences to reward trying more than one ride.

Gameplay

The first few races put you in a pleasingly silly mood: you are a caveman in a crude vehicle, jostling with three rivals over three laps and grabbing weapons that can turn a close race upside down. Bone bombs and land mines invite dirty driving, while bottle rockets and homing pigeons give you ways to strike from farther back. That mixture makes position matter, but never lets a lead feel entirely safe.

Vehicle choice is where Cro-Mag Rally earns more attention than its cartoon premise might initially suggest. The 11 rides vary in acceleration, speed, suspension, and traction, so the quick-launching option will not necessarily feel like the best choice when the course asks more of its handling. Spend a little time with the Bone Buggy, Geode Cruiser, and Logmobile rather than sticking with your first pick. You may find that a vehicle which feels slower at the start is easier to keep under control once the race gets messy.

The nine courses move through Stone, Bronze, and Iron Age settings, and that broader spread helps the game avoid feeling like the same prehistoric lap repeated. Race mode is direct and familiar: beat three computer-controlled cavemen across three laps. Gather changes the target by asking you to collect arrowheads scattered around the track. It is a modest alternate mode, but a useful one when you want to focus on route choice instead of simply finishing ahead of everyone else.

Graphics

Cro-Mag Rally’s imagery is built around cavemen and deliberately primitive vehicles: the Bone Buggy, Geode Cruiser, and Logmobile are the kind of broad visual jokes you can understand immediately. The course themes also move from the Stone Age through the Bronze and Iron Ages, giving the game more variety than a single cave-and-rock backdrop.

Story

There is not a dramatic plot carrying you from race to race. Brog is a caveman racer, and the central conflict is simply competition with rival cavemen. That is enough for this sort of game: the premise exists to justify prehistoric vehicles and absurd ammunition, not to demand your attention between events.

The time-period progression does give the races a loose sense of travel, shifting from Stone Age courses to Bronze and Iron Age ones. It is a small framing device, but it keeps the caveman theme from being locked to one joke.

If you want a racer with characters to invest in or a big narrative payoff, this is not the reason to play. The story stays out of the way, leaving Brog’s race to be decided by vehicle choice, track awareness, and well-timed attacks.

Overall Experience

Cro-Mag Rally is an easy recommendation if you like kart racers that value disruption as much as clean cornering. The weapons give every pack of racers some tension, and the differing stats across 11 vehicles mean you can experiment instead of treating each selection as a cosmetic swap. Its caveman comedy is uncomplicated, but it fits the fast, mischievous action.

Frustration can naturally creep in when a weapon changes the outcome of a tight race, especially if you prefer racers where a clean lead remains secure. Here, retaliation and sudden reversals are part of the bargain. Go in ready to trade hits, recover your line, and make use of whatever you collect.

The payoff is a focused racer with a nice spread of course themes, vehicle behavior, and a second objective mode in Gather. It does not need to overcomplicate its idea: race, collect, attack, and try a different contraption when your current one is not clicking. For more on its original framing, see the official Cro-Mag Rally page.
