ATARI LYNX EMULATOR CORE
Beetle Lynx
Beetle Lynx is the libretro core implementing an Atari Lynx emulator (a Mednafen Lynx port, itself derived from the Handy Lynx emulator). It runs Atari Lynx ROMs under libretro frontends (RetroArch, Lakka, etc.) and is maintained in the libretro GitHub organisation.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why use Beetle Lynx?
Beetle Lynx is a Mednafen-based libretro core offering an accurate, frontend-friendly Atari Lynx implementation with core options, state saves, rewind, and libretro input mapping. Use it when you want a maintained Lynx core integrated with RetroArch/Lakka ecosystems.
BEST FOR
Best for
Users of RetroArch, Lakka or other libretro frontends who want an easy-to-install Lynx core with frontend-level features (states, rewind, screenshots) and configurable core options.
The people behind Beetle Lynx
History and upstream
Beetle Lynx is a libretro port of Mednafen's Lynx code, which in turn traces back to Handy. The libretro docs list K. Wilkins among authors and indicate the core combines code licensed under zlib and GPLv2. The project is hosted in libretro's repositories and appears as 'Atari – Lynx (Beetle Lynx)' in the official core list and documentation.
What Beetle Lynx supports

Setup note: This setup guide shows how to use Beetle Lynx as a libretro core (RetroArch example). It covers getting the core, required firmware, where to place files, and basic runtime options as documented by libretro.
- 1) Install a libretro frontend: Install RetroArch (or Lakka / another libretro frontend) for your platform using the frontend's official distribution channels.
- 2) Download the Beetle Lynx core: Open RetroArch, go to Online Updater (or Cores > Download a Core), and download 'Atari – Lynx (Beetle Lynx)' from the core list. The frontend places the core in its cores directory.
- 3) Prepare firmware (lynxboot.img): Beetle Lynx requires the Lynx boot image file named exactly lynxboot.img in the frontend's system/BIOS directory. The libretro documentation identifies lynxboot.img as required and provides the expected MD5 (fcd403db69f54290b51035d82f835e7b). Place your legally obtained lynxboot.img into RetroArch's system directory (usually retroarch/system or as configured in Settings > Directory > System/BIOS).
- 4) Place ROMs and supported extensions: Put Atari Lynx ROM images into your content/roms directory. Beetle Lynx supports .lnx and non-headered ROMs; homebrews in .o are also supported according to the docs. Use clear folder naming so your frontend can create playlists.
- 5) Launch content with the core: From RetroArch choose Load Content, point to the Lynx ROM, and select the Beetle Lynx core when prompted (or choose it beforehand via Load Core).
- 6) Configure core options and controls: Open the Quick Menu > Options to change Beetle Lynx core settings (for example Auto-rotate Screen). Configure input mapping under Settings > Input if you need to remap RetroPad controls to Lynx buttons. Save core options if desired.
- 7) Saves, states, and features: Beetle Lynx supports save states, rewind, screenshots, and core-level options. Regular in-game saves are handled per core/frontend. Use the frontend's save state and rewind controls for instant state management.
Software reminder: Beetle Lynx does not include commercial games, ROMs, or firmware. Acquire lynxboot.img and game ROMs only from legal sources you own or that are freely distributable.
