PLAYSTATION 2 EMULATOR
Fceumm-PS2
Homebrew port of the FCEUmm (FCEUltra) Nintendo Entertainment System/Famicom emulator that runs on PlayStation 2 hardware. Provides NES ROM playback, save/load states, basic menu and controller support, and PS2-specific features such as multitap support and separate turbo buttons.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why this project exists
FCEUmm-PS2 was created to bring NES/Famicom emulation to the PlayStation 2 as a homebrew application so users could play NES games on a TV via a PS2. The README and historical notes explain it began as a port of FCEUltra with extra mapper support to run a wide set of NES ROMs on PS2 hardware using the PS2 homebrew toolchain and graphics libraries.
BEST FOR
What it does best
Plays NES/Famicom ROMs on real PlayStation 2 hardware with features expected from FCEUmm builds — mapper coverage inherited from the upstream FCEUltra/FCEUmm sources, save/load states, basic input mapping for DualShock controllers, multitap support (up to 4 players) and simple browser/menu for launching ROMs on the console.
The people behind Fceumm-PS2
History and upstream
FCEUmm-PS2 is a direct PS2 port of the FCEUltra/FCEUmm NES emulator sources. The repository includes a historical note from the porter describing the porting motivation and thanks to the ps2dev community for ps2sdk and gsKit support. The project repackages FCEUmm changes needed to run under the PS2 SDK and uses PS2 homebrew libraries; documentation in the repo lists dependencies and notes about removed gzip ROM support and other port-specific changes.
What Fceumm-PS2 supports
- Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom (ROM playback on PS2)
- PS2 controllers (DualShock), PS2 multitap (up to 4 players)
- Save states and in-app save/load
- Homebrew deployment methods for PS2 (ELF executables)

Setup note: This guide explains how to obtain the project, build (if desired), and install or run prebuilt binaries on a PlayStation 2. It assumes familiarity with PS2 homebrew basics (uLaunchELF, Open PS2 Loader or similar) and that you own any ROMs you use. The project depends on PS2SDK and gsKit and is built with the PS2 toolchain.
- 1. Get the code or download a release: Prefer the Releases page for a prebuilt ELF (faster). Otherwise clone the repository from the project's official GitHub: ps2homebrew/Fceumm-PS2. Check the Releases tab for a ready-to-run binary (ELF) or download the full source to build yourself. Use the Releases page to avoid building if you only want to run the emulator.
- 2. If building: prepare the PS2 toolchain and libraries: Install ps2dev/ps2sdk and a PS2 toolchain (ps2toolchain). Install gsKit and the ps2sdk-ports required by the repository (libjpeg, libpng, zlib). Confirm the toolchain is in your PATH and that make and gcc from the PS2 toolchain are available. The repository includes Makefile and Makefile.libretro to drive builds; follow its README and porting notes for any PS2-specific build flags.
- 3. Build the project (optional): From the repository root, run the provided Makefile targets using the PS2 SDK toolchain. Typical flow: ensure PS2 SDK environment variables (PS2DEV) are set, then run make. Address missing dependencies by installing ps2sdk-ports and gsKit into your PS2SDK installation. If you encounter build errors, consult the repo's README, porting.txt, and changelog for known issues and any platform-specific patches included in the tree.
- 4. Transfer the ELF to your PlayStation 2: Use a PS2 homebrew launcher such as uLaunchELF or Open PS2 Loader to run the ELF. Transfer the ELF and ROMs to a USB drive formatted FAT32, to a network share using FTP/USB methods, or install to an internal HDD (on compatible PS2 Slim/Phat models) using homebrew tools. For convenience, place ROMs in a folder the emulator can browse; the README documents the expected file browsing behavior.
- 5. Running and configuration: Launch the ELF via uLaunchELF or OPL. Use the controller to navigate the emulator browser and select an NES ROM. The emulator supports save states and in-game menu functions (save/load state, turbo buttons, FDS disk swap for Famicom Disk System images if supported). To use game genie ROM support, place the game genie ROM file named gg.rom in the location described by the README; the README notes this feature but does not claim to include the ROM.
- 6. Troubleshooting and notes: If options are not saved, consult the project's issues page — configuration write errors have been reported. The repo's Issues and changelog are the primary places to check for problems and fixes. If performance or graphics issues occur, ensure you used the recommended gsKit-enabled build and that your PS2 model and firmware allow the intended homebrew access method.
Software reminder: This project does not include commercial game ROMs, console firmware, or BIOS files. You must supply your own NES ROMs and any optional support files (for example, game genie ROM) and comply with applicable copyright laws.
