NES EMULATOR
nesoid
NESoid — an Android port of an open-source NES (Nintendo Entertainment System / Famicom) emulator. Fork available on GitHub that updates build system and Android compatibility while preserving the original emulator core and features (on-screen keypad, save states, cheats, limited netplay).

WHY IT MATTERS
Why this project is notable
NESoid has been a long-standing NES emulator for Android devices and is derived from an older SourceForge project. It is notable because it brought NES emulation to early Android phones and because forks persist that update the project for more recent Android toolchains.
BEST FOR
Best use case
Use NESoid when you need a lightweight, standalone NES emulator APK or source you can build for older Android devices or when you want a simple FCEU/FCEUX-derived core packaged as an app. For modern Android devices or advanced accuracy/features, consider current maintained alternatives (RetroArch with a core, Mesen, FCEUX on desktop).
The people behind nesoid
History and provenance
The repository is a fork of the original SourceForge NESoid project. The GitHub fork documents changes such as moving to Gradle, targeting Android 5.0 (minimum Android 4.1), updated UI, and fixes to native C code and the NDK to allow building with modern Android toolchains. The project license is GPL (the repo contains GPL text). Community discussion and third-party mirrors/APK distributions exist, and community posts indicate the emulator was widely used on older Android phones. Security researchers have observed instances where third-party repackaged builds (not the official source) were used in malware campaigns, so verifying the download origin is important.
What nesoid supports
- Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) / Famicom — .nes and compatible ROM images
- On-screen controls and external controllers (Android input devices)
- Save states, cheats, light gun emulation, and limited netplay (Bluetooth/Wi-Fi) as advertised in the repository
- VS. System ROM support (as noted in project docs)
Download and availability
OFFICIAL DOWNLOADS
Get nesoid
Official code and release artifacts are available from the project's GitHub repository and its Releases page. SourceForge contains the original project tree and posted APKs from earlier distributions; however, be cautious with APKs from third-party sites — prefer building from source or downloading releases from the official repository owner.

Setup note: Practical setup notes — verified from the project repository and release listings. This guide covers getting a usable NESoid app: obtain a trusted build, install on Android, or build yourself from source with the Android NDK/Gradle configuration included in the repo. It also lists important caveats (no commercial ROMs/BIOS included; verify APK safety).
- 1) Verify sources and choose a download method: Preferred: use the GitHub repository releases page for proninyaroslav/nesoid to download official release artifacts. If you cannot find a signed/release APK there, consider cloning the repository and building from source. Avoid random APKs from untrusted marketplaces; security reports note repackaged builds have been abused.
- 2) Installing a downloaded APK: If you obtained an official APK release: enable installation from unknown sources on your Android device (Android settings vary by version), transfer the APK, then install. The GitHub fork targets Android API level 21+ with a minimum Android version of 4.1 as documented in the README; on modern devices verify runtime permissions and input settings after install.
- 3) Building from source (recommended for safety / custom builds): Clone the GitHub repository. The project uses Gradle and includes native components (jni/neslib). You will need a working Android SDK, Android NDK, and a matching NDK configuration. Update Android SDK/NDK paths in local environment or gradle.properties if necessary, then run the Gradle wrapper (./gradlew assembleDebug) to produce an APK. The repository README and Android.mk/gradle files are the authoritative build instructions; make sure to use an NDK version compatible with the native code (the repo notes fixes for modern NDKs but does not pin a specific NDK version).
- 4) ROMs and legal note: NESoid does not include commercial games, BIOS, firmware, or keys. Use only ROM files you legally own. The emulator accepts standard NES ROM images (commonly .nes). The repository mentions VS. System ROM support; check ROM packaging requirements if you use VS. ROMs.
- 5) First-run configuration: On first run, configure the on-screen keypad layout to your preference. NESoid supports save states, cheats, and light gun emulation — configure controls and input mapping in settings. If you use an external controller, map Android input buttons to the emulator controls through the settings menu or Android input mapping.
- 6) Netplay and multiplayer: The project advertises Bluetooth/Wi‑Fi netplay. Expect limitations and latency compared with modern netplay solutions; use on a local network or Bluetooth peer-to-peer if attempting multiplayer. There is no guarantee of interoperability with other emulator implementations.
- 7) Troubleshooting and building notes: If the native build fails, check the NDK toolchain and Android API levels. The repo includes C sources derived from older FCEU/FCEUX code — you may need to adjust compiler flags for recent NDKs. For audio or rendering issues, try changing audio buffer settings or video filters in-app; consult the repository’s ChangeLog and source comments for historical fixes. If you must run on a modern device and experience UI scaling issues, consider screen DPI or disabling post-processing filters if the app exposes that option.
- 8) Security and APK provenance: Prefer building from source or downloading releases directly from the proninyaroslav GitHub releases page. Third-party repackaged copies have been referenced in security reports — avoid unknown mirrors.
Software reminder: The emulator does not include commercial ROMs or firmware. Ensure you use legally obtained ROM files. If you build from source, follow the repository license (GPL) and include license text as required.
