Gameplay
A punch moves the argument toward the edge of the sidewalk. The goal is to force the other fighter into the open manhole.
High and low attacks give the opponent something to defend against. Timing matters more than memorizing a long list of moves.
A flowerpot can interrupt the exchange from above. When a police car passes, both fighters have another reason to stop looking so busy.
Graphics
The side-on street keeps both fighters and the nearby hazards visible. Shopfronts and windows give the small arena enough detail to explain where the next interruption comes from.
Story
The setting is a street fight between two rivals. Their immediate problem is the person standing in front of them.
There is no long journey between the bouts. Progress means winning the exchange and continuing along the street.
The surrounding neighborhood joins the action through its hazards. A resident with a flowerpot can change a fight without ever stepping onto the sidewalk.
Overall Experience
Urban Champion offers a compact early fighting game. Its narrow move set makes the immediate objective easy to understand.
The interruptions give that short contest a little more to watch. Ignoring the windows can be as troublesome as ignoring a punch.
This is the Nintendo game that first reached the Japanese Famicom in 1984. Its appeal depends on enjoying a simple contest of position and timing rather than an elaborate fighting system.
