The first time players loaded up Advance Wars on the Game Boy Advance, the screen filled with crisp, animated units and bright, readable maps. The GBA’s 32-bit processor let developers create fast-moving strategy games and action titles that felt closer to home consoles than any previous handheld. But the original model’s unlit screen meant players had to angle the system just right under a lamp or sunlight, making tense moments in Metroid Fusion or Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow even more suspenseful as they squinted to see what lurked in the shadows.
A screen for every room
Nintendo’s hardware choices shaped every session. The wide, horizontal layout of the launch model fit adult hands better than the Game Boy Color, but the lack of a built-in light was a constant complaint. The SP revision flipped the script with a clamshell design and a front-lit, later backlit, display. Suddenly, players could explore Advance Wars’ battlefields or dodge enemies in Wario Land 4 under any lighting. The Micro shrank the system to a pocketable size with a sharp, vibrant screen, but it dropped support for older Game Boy and Color cartridges, narrowing the library for anyone with a backlog.
Games in your pocket
Game selection changed with each revision. The original and SP models let players revisit classics like Pokémon Gold or Tetris, while the Micro focused strictly on the GBA’s own library. Developers leaned into the hardware’s strengths, filling cartridges with detailed sprites, smooth scrolling, and layered backgrounds. The GBA’s sound chip, though limited compared to home consoles, gave games like Metroid Fusion a tense, atmospheric edge. The experience of playing on a GBA always depended on the model in your hands and the light in your room.
