The Week in Emulation: October 26 to November 2, 2026

October 26 to November 2, 2026. A PlayStation 4 trophy that refuses to unlock is a small but infuriating way to end a game. This week’s shadPS4 release addresses that bug alongside changes to video, input, and system libraries. Azahar has a substantial new 3DS alpha for testers, while three Gear emulators refine play on high refresh rate displays. Across the four monitored categories, we found 183 notices across 68 projects. Most of the console entries were successive development builds, grouped by project in the dated log below.

PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS

shadPS4 0.21.0 fixes trophies, game hangs, and more

shadPS4 0.21.0 is a numbered release, not one of the daily prerelease builds surrounding it. Its notes include a fix for platinum trophies that never unlocked and a disconnected-microphone stub intended to get some affected games past hangs. There is also work on add-on content, controller input, video decoding, and the Vulkan renderer. Those are targeted repairs, not a promise that every PlayStation 4 game now runs correctly.

Mac users get several Rosetta 2 workarounds for translated CPU instructions, while the project also corrects filesystem and memory-management behavior. The shadPS4 profile has the broader project overview, and the source repository carries the full change history.

Azahar 2127.0 Alpha 4 gives handheld players more controls

A 3DS game asking for text input can be awkward on a handheld PC with a controller and no handy keyboard. Azahar 2127.0 Alpha 4 adds an optional on-screen software keyboard for desktop emulation. Android users gain per-application settings, opened by long-pressing a game in the list, and the team reports reduced audio, frame, and input latency in some cases. Its measured performance gain on one Mali device is a project result, not a forecast for every phone.

The release page explicitly labels Alpha 4 as unstable test software. Players who want the current stable branch should use the project’s stable downloads instead. See the Azahar profile and official source for the project context.

Three Gear releases tackle display timing

On a modern high refresh rate monitor, an old handheld game should not sound as if the emulator is forever catching up with the screen. Gearsystem 3.9.24, Gearcoleco 1.7.6, and Gearboy 3.8.20 are confirmed numbered releases from the same developer. Their notes emphasize improved VSync pacing or audio synchronization on high refresh rate displays. Gearcoleco also improves OpenGL rendering and video recording; Gearsystem and Gearboy remember the last folder used in file dialogs.

The changes are modest, but they address the ordinary experience of starting a game, opening another file, and listening through a long session. Each project has its own Gearsystem, Gearcoleco, or Gearboy profile and release log.

Other releases and the development stream

VirtualC64 6.2 reached a stable release after its beta. The final notes call out a Commodore file-system bug, drive idle behavior, and several drive-related tests. That is welcome maintenance for anyone waiting at a disk prompt rather than a claim of a new C64 feature. The source repository has the full project record.

Supermodel and FinalBurn Neo continued issuing arcade builds, while DOSBox Staging and DOSBox-X supplied PC snapshots. The console feed was again dominated by repeated development builds for the same projects. PCSX2’s 2.9.x notices are nightly development builds, and entries labeled ShadPS4 Pre are prereleases. We have kept those notices in the log without presenting them as additional stable launches.

Complete grouped dated log

These notices were published between Monday mornings in Eastern time. Dates below are notice dates. Repeated builds sit under one project, and a version-looking notice alone does not establish a stable release. Project names link to Retro Replay profiles where one exists, with verified official release, homepage, and source-code destinations alongside them where available.
