Casper’s Unfinished SNES Translation Gets a New English Release

Kat is searching a haunted mansion for her father, and a little ghost is watching her. That early photo scene in the Japanese Casper now has an English caption, along with the introduction and other picture-based scenes left unfinished in tashi’s translation. Our Casper English Translation Continuation is available now as version 1.0-beta1.

This is the 1997 Japanese Super Famicom adventure, a different game from the Casper released in North America in 1996. You guide Kat through an isometric mansion, searching rooms, solving puzzles, and working with Casper to find Dr. Harvey. The rooms are packed with furniture and awkward corners, with a friendly ghost for company and considerably less friendly ghosts elsewhere in the house.

The opening of Casper now introduces the mansion and its rumored treasure in English.

Tashi had already done the heavy lifting on the main dialogue, English font, script tables, and text insertion. His abandoned project, dated March 13, 2012, included the source material that allowed this continuation to happen. The unfinished introduction used compressed text, while several picture scenes displayed their words through a separate sprite-based format. Those remaining formats needed their own work before the missing English could appear where it belonged.

The continuation by dadmin / Retro Replay adds three English introduction pages, 43 photo and ending caption blocks, the Game Over message, seven damaged-save warnings, closing narration, and English floor labels. Nine dialogue passages were also reviewed against the Japanese source comments. With the photo captions appearing in their proper scenes, the old workaround that repeated them in dialogue has been removed.

The original art, music, controls, and game engine remain intact. Tashi receives credit for the original translation throughout the release package, which also preserves his original readme. This is a continuation of his published work, without implying his endorsement or a formal handover.

Visit the Casper translation release page to download the patch and readme, see the screenshots, or use the browser patcher. Apply this patch directly to a clean, unheadered 1 MB Japanese ROM, rather than an already translated copy. The release page includes the required checksums. No game ROM is included.
