Retro Replay Review
Gameplay
An investigation advances through conversations, exploration, and the information collected along the way. Reading closely matters when another exchange changes the understanding of a suspect.
The interface divides the presentation into windows. Text and images share the screen rather than leaving one fixed view to carry every scene.
Puzzles interrupt the reading with another task to resolve. The pace favors following the case over searching for constant action.
Graphics
Illustration, text, and changing panels give the story a distinctive presentation. The windowed layout lets a scene shift its emphasis without keeping every element on screen at once.
Story
The setting is a fictional urban district troubled by a series of killings. Investigators encounter the name of Kamui Uehara as they follow the case.
The story includes a police investigation and a journalist’s perspective. Following both gives the mystery more than one account of events.
Connections between people and past incidents gradually complicate the immediate case. The next piece of information can be as unsettling as another crime scene.
Overall Experience
The Silver Case asks for attention to its writing and presentation. It suits a player willing to let a conversation carry a scene.
The panel-based interface gives that reading a rhythm of its own. Anyone expecting a conventional action game should approach it as an investigative adventure.
This was Grasshopper Manufacture’s debut title. The original Japanese PlayStation release and the later localized remaster belong to different points in its publication history.
